12. Isn't this like Hoover's last months in office?
I remember reading about a Broadway play running in 1932. One scene had former millionaires, still in their formal finery (although looking a little shabby) eating in an automat. Doing things like mixing the ketchup with hot water to make tomato soup. And they sang a cynical little song that for years were popular - although as a kid, I never heard the lyrics.

Mis-ter Her-bert Hoo-ver
Says the time has come to buy,
So let's have a-noth-er cup of cof-fee
And let's have a-noth-er piece of pie!


And the Republicans nominated Hoover for another term, claiming that his conservative candidacy "belied the vanity of earthly things," or something like that. Does anyone imagine that Bush will not show up at the Republican convention and won't be given at least polite applause? They'll be applauding, of course, for his act to end and for him to get the hell off the stage.
