Look at the vast amounts of money contributed after Katrina and after the Asian tsunami. Why was so much money donated if we have lost our humanity? I think it's too easy to condemn people in broad strokes.
That being said, I think the current TV culture has coarsened us. We see so much crap on TV, so much trash and violence, that it begins to seem eerily normal.
