Media outlets across the world carried unconfirmed speculation that one of the men shot dead was a 24-year-old from County Tipperary.

It was reported that his social networking website, hosted by Bebo, bore a message from a friend last night simply stating "RIP bro".

The website in question painted a portrait of a man obsessed with guns and assassins, placing him in South America and specifically, according to messages left by his friends, in Bolivia.

There was speculation that a photograph of a fresh tattoo on the suspected Irishman's left shoulder and arm may have matched a tattoo on the corpse of a man strongly resembling the Tipperary man and featured on the front page of Bolivian newspaper, El Mundo.

A spokeswoman for the Irish Foreign Office last night emphasised all such reports were unconfirmed speculation. However, it is understood the Irish Foreign Office are in contact with a County Tipperary family in relation to the matter, in order to provide possible consular support.
