Bush will seek $87 billion for Iraq
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush will announce on Sunday night that he plans to ask Congress for $87 billion to fund the U.S. military deployment in Iraq and pay for reconstruction, a Republican source said.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the money would fund U.S. military operations in Iraq and reconstruction over the coming budget year.

5. Where's that money going to come from?
We're already $598 billion in the hole for this year, thanks to Chimpy's giveaway of the federal treasury to his overrich pals and campaign contributors. Another $87 billion on top of that?

Does this man have any concept of money whatsoever?

33. It's greater than almost every other department, too.
Actually, the education budget is around $50 billion. In fact, what Bush wants to spend just on Iraq is equal or greater than every other department of the federal government, apart from Defense ($358 billion), Health and Human Services ($502 billion), and Treasury, which includes service on the rapidly increasing national debt ($368 billion).

Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 07:38 PM by KeepItReal
"The government is not really telling the truth to the American people. Past administrations, from the time of Alexander Hamilton, have -- on the average -- run responsible budgetary policies. What we have here is a form of looting ..."

"... this is the worst government the US has ever had in its more than 200 years of history. It has engaged in extraordinarily irresponsible policies, not only in foreign and economic but also in social and environmental policy.

This is not normal government policy..."

- US Nobel Laureate George A. Akerlof (An Economist)

16. Is he asking us?
If so, the answer is HELL, NO!

Unfortunately, he's not really asking, is he? He's just telling us what is going to happen, just like every other damn speech he's made in the last 2 years.

What are we going to say? No, sorry, we don't think you're responsible enough to handle another 87 billion? No, sorry, we were against this war from the start and you lied and dragged us into it anyway, so no, we don't choose to pay for occupying and rebuilding the country you trashed?

Or how about this one: Sure, George, take all you want. Spend it however you want. Oh, but you might have a little trouble getting any tax dollars from the 8 - 10% of Americans who can't find a freaking JOB!

17. That's aproximately $4000.00 per Iraqi.
I bet that for $1000.00 each they would have risen up to handle all this themselves and saved us 66.75 billion dollars, which comes to $225.00 per U.S citizen.

Or would have allowed Enron to have another tax cut.

30. Not just this year's
All the tax cuts enacted since W usurped office should be rolled back, at least for those making more than low-middle class wages.

But you know the Repugs intended all along to shrink non-military government, including at the state levels, including to the most needy among us, and to hell with jobs as long as profits are good.

So, don't count on it.

At the least though, we should expect the Democrats to make a lot of noise about this, including during campaigns, from sea to shining sea.

28. A small bet
They will never, EVER recover the money that they have sunk in to this country. The minute the oil pipeline is fixed, a new hole will be blasted into it. The insurgents will see to that.

Talk about driving us over a cliff!!!!

I know the BFEE feels that Iraq was the ultimate "prize" on the face of the earth to conquer and grab, but damn they forgot that there were 22 million people living on top of that oil.

Hold onto that next paycheck. We may be in for a "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride".

34. what's the accounting look like?
" I will soon submit to Congress a request for 87 billion dollars. The request will cover ongoing military and intelligence operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, which we expect will cost 66 billion dollars over the next year. "

If you get $87 Bn and only allocate $66 Bn you have $21 Bn unaccounted for. Is that all going to be lost to corporate profits?
That would be my bet.

38. A Modest Fundraising Proposal
Our president has just asked the congress to provide him another 87 billion to clean up the mess he has made of Iraq and Afghanistan. There may be an alternative. Our president may not be much good at things like diplomacy or economics. There is one thing, however, at which he is exceedingly good. He has a remarkable talent for fundraising. He has taken the art of obtaining campaign donations to unprecedented levels.
Therefore he should not finance the cleanup by increasing the already staggering national debt, or worse, by betraying the taxpayers to whom he has recently returned his predecessors budget surplus, and then some. Rather, he should make use of his rare talent. He should launch in the white house, a series of thousand-dollar-a-plate dinners. To these he should invite everyone who voted for him in the 2000 election. Unfortunately a majority of the voters did not vote for him, so these dinners would only raise about $50 billion of the required amount, assuming that everyone showed up. In order to raise the remaining $37 billion, he would have to also invite the 100 million voters who did not care who won in 2000. Hopefully a third of them would now feel more patriotic and attend at $1000 a plate. This would still leave 3 or 4 billion, but he could pass the hat to some of his oil buddies. After all he has done favors for them from time to time.
