Two U.S. Soldiers Wounded in Iraqi Attack, Britain to Send 1,200 More Troops

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Breaking a lull in attacks on U.S. forces, insurgents set off a bomb that wounded two U.S. soldiers in Baghdad, while Britain said it would send 1,200 more troops to bolster coalition forces in Iraq.
Iraqi guerrillas attacked an American patrol in Baghdad with explosives as soldiers were driving out of a tunnel in the center of the city, the military said. The attack wounded two soldiers, damaged two Humvees, one of which turned over and caught fire.

There have been no reports of U.S. combat deaths in the last few days, and on Sunday afternoon, military spokesman, Lt. Col. George Krivo, said the U.S. military had completed a 24-hour period in which no American soldiers had been killed or wounded. The near-daily attacks on American troops have become a serious problem for the Bush administration, and it has called for help from other countries to restore security.

Britain said Monday that it will send two additional battalions to Iraq, adding 1,200 troops to its forces on the ground. Britain has 11,000 troops in the country. (snip/...)

1. Schedule the photo-op!

No shit? A whole 24 hours? Wow ... mission accomplished!

Interesting phrasing though ... no "reports" in "the last few days"
but only "a 24-hour period" with no US killed or wounded?
Maybe it's only the reports that are under control again...

5. Wounded!
Sort of a general term to say the least, one might have a tendency to not envision what is the actual horrible case. Like Sgt. Dewitt 26 of Portland, Oregon who according to reporter who interviewed him at Walter Reed Medical Center, sat on his bed dazed, disbeleiving looking down where his hands used to be and said," I don't know I just don't know. What will I do" Jesus, I cry everytime I write this to someone.

3. CNN's story on U.S. wounded soldiers
(snip)

U.S. troops wounded in Baghdad attack
Four detained in raid in Saddam's hometown
Monday, September 8, 2003 Posted: 1457 GMT (10:57 PM HKT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- At least two U.S. soldiers were wounded Monday morning when an improvised explosives device hit a logistics convoy in Baghdad, a U.S. military spokesman said.

Witnesses told a slightly different story, saying three soldiers were wounded in the attack -- two seriously -- when a device was thrown off a bridge and into the convoy. At least one Humvee was damaged in the attack at Tahrir Square.

The U.S. military also said Monday that soldiers conducting a raid in Tikrit detained four people, including three suspected of involvement with improvised explosive devices that repeatedly have jolted American forces.

Sunday night's raid of houses was in a "bad neighborhood" of Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown in north-central Iraq, according to Col. James Hickey.

The fourth man taken into custody was found with anti-American propaganda in his home, Hickey said, and authorities wanted to question him. (snip/...)

6. Song "Dateline Iraq"
The man landed on the carrier
a million miles from any shore
but they'd turned the ship around
now what did they do that for
how about one terrific photo-op!
chorus
"We don't feel like heroes any more
we can't help but think of Black Hawk Down
the President says 'bring 'em on'"*
but this is deadly violent Baghdad town
it's no Crawford, Texas and it's not Washington
and they don't feel like heroes anymore.

Sgt. Dewitt dazed, disbeleiving
sat on his bed and stared
at the end of his arms
where his hands had disappeared**
while in the meantime and between time
back at the ranch when not collecting loot
the Man was busy donning his exercising suit.

To talk the talk don't make the walk
you can strut and chortle a bully song
secure at home safely say, bring 'em on"
but if you don't walk the walk
then that crap is just a crock
what are they being killed and wounded for?
Bush and Cheney's Halliburton war!

"We're outnumbered and exhausted
we're being killed and injured every day"*
those "evil doers" in Washington
wish they were in that stinkin' fray
told they'd be shining knights
loved and honored by the people of Iraq
All you arm chair Generals and Rumsfeld
would you care to take that statement back?

"We don't feel like heroes any more
and we can't help but think of Black Hawk Down
the President says 'bring 'em on'"*
but this is deadly violent Baghdad town
it's no Crawford, Texas and it's not Washington
and they don't feel like heroes any more.
