Singer Curses at Inaugural Youth Concert

Jan 18, 9:59 PM (ET)

By LEIGH STROPE

WASHINGTON (AP) - You might say the Janet Jackson moment of President Bush's inaugural festivities came Tuesday at a youth concert with hundreds of preteen Hilary Duff fans in the audience.

(snip)

Borrowing a word from Motley Crue's Neil, the lead singer of Fuel proclaimed, "Welcome to the greatest ----ing country in the world." Brett Scallions followed with a quick apology of "excuse my language."

(snip)

The outburst was one of the most interesting moments of Tuesday's concert, hosted by Bush twins Jenna and Barbara, who were in the audience but did not come on stage.

Duff was the headliner at the half-full, D.C. Armory concert, which paid tribute to youth volunteerism and community service. Duff, who performed in a black sequin top, rolled-up jeans and sneakers, warmed up the crowd for the president and first lady Laura Bush.

as it happens, i was working in a hotel in DC at the time - the hotel that U2 was staying at. DC was SRO across the board - there were no "half-filled" venues. nothing but talent and class back in those days!

for the express purpose of spreading GOP bile into the teen paradigm?

as in I was a fascist when fascists weren't cool, or something?

I'm finding it stranger and stranger these young girls getting uber marketed and how they all have regressive ideologies to spout. It's curious.

45. They would have to pay me...
...enough so that it would earn enough interest such that I could use said interest to support a real liberal/progressive media-think tank infrastructure, i.e. as least as much disbursed per year as Richard Mellon "I never met a false but disparaging story about Clinton I didn't like enough to pay for" Scaife, without ever touching the principal.

Then, and only then, could I justify it ethically.

Oh, yeah, there would also have to be enough on the side for me to go to Amsterdam for a month to take certain "anti-nausea herbs" to calm my stomach down after playing for that House of Ill Fame (that is, the Bush Gang).

AND I'd wear my anti-W shirt :)

62. Explain how proganda from 'role models' promotes war crimes.
I quit a career as a touring sound engineer because the black singers I was working with sang at the White House and then at the NAACP's annual tribute to the Military which Colin Powell attended which was sponsored by Lockheed Martin. The NAACP is complicit with the Pentagon because poor African Americans use the US military as a jobs program. Even Jesse Jackson get BIG BIG bucks from defense contractors for this reason.

I refused to help wave a flag for war criminals and people who do need to be either educated or shunned for their offenses to humanity.

Show what happened to the Dixie Chicks who got trashed by Clear Channel while war-profiteer Toby Keith sucked up fans and loot by supporting Bush*.

Play Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young's or Joni Mitchell's 'Woodstock' or Neil Young's 'Ohio' plus pictures of National Guardsmen assassinating college students protesting the war.
http://www.picsearch.com/info.cgi?q=kent%20state%201970&cid=348790796623

Explain that blindly supporting authorities and their war crimes FOR MONEY OR TO PROMOTE YOUR CAREER is a crime against humanity, knowingly or not.

12. At inaugural youth concert, positive message trumps cool quotient
http://www.sanluisobispo.com/mld/sanluisobispo/news/politics/10675574.htm

<snip>

Before the lineup was announced for "America's Future Rocks Today," Republican groups had pressured concert planners to keep it clean. Reports that Kid Rock would perform at the concert had Christian conservatives crying foul - language, that is. Organizers insisted that the raunchy rocker was never officially booked. In the end, the teen audience was more Disney devotee than hard rocker. Squeaky-clean Hilary Duff, whose biography noted that she doesn't have a driver's license yet, and Ryan Cabrera were fan favorites, while the harder-edged Fuel drew a lukewarm response.

<snip>

"The concert will overshadow anything that happened in the planning stages," inaugural spokesman Ben Porritt said before the event. "We're thrilled with the performers we've put together."

<snip>

Young fans waved glow sticks and sang along to their favorite songs. And they went wild when President Bush and first lady Laura Bush made a quasi-surprise appearance. "How about Hilary Duff? She was fantastic," the president said. "How about 3 Doors Down? Pretty cool guys, right? Seem cool to me." The Bush's 23-year-old twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, did not appear onstage at the concert.
The president emphasized that the event was about more than music, encouraging the crowd to get involved in their communities. "Take time out of your life to make somebody else's life better," he said.
Teens and 20-somethings offered testimonials about volunteer work during the two-hour concert.

<snip>

While the message was positive, the concert's cool quotient was in question. "I guess it would be a cool concert if you're a 17-year-old girl," said Roy Trakin, senior editor of Hits magazine. Not really, said Millicent Bolin, 17-year-old from New Orleans. Many in the audience were on school trips, and some weren't thrilled that the concert was on their itinerary. "We had to come," Millicent said. "I don't like these people ... they're too fake and mainstream." If the concert fell short on the hip scale, it wasn't for lack of trying. Stephen Baldwin took the stage on a skateboard. "Are you guys rockin' or what?" he enthused. While the star power was only so-so, according to Trakin, he gave the Republicans credit for persuading a half-dozen acts to perform. "It's not all country and polka," he noted. Still, the GOP line-up didn't compare to the Democrats' star-studded concerts last fall that featured Bruce Springsteen, the Dave Matthews Band, R.E.M. and other heavy hitters, Trakin said. "All the action is still on the Democrats' side," he said. "Bill Clinton had Fleetwood Mac ... George Bush has Hilary Duff."

Many in the audience were on school trips, and some weren't thrilled that the concert was on their itinerary. "We had to come," Millicent said.

First, rounding up patients at Walter Reed to half-fill the seats at the Gee Dumbass Salute To The Military yesterday, now they can't even scrape together enough school groups to make a decent showing.

Wonder why...

Bush does this every single day, I must admit; however, it is invariably HIS life that he takes time out to make better.

Oh BOY, all the groups with "family" in the name would tear a dem to pieces for this. Bush took the stage and didn't mention it...

"My call to you all is that as you enjoy the great freedoms of America and as you enjoy yourself at this inauguration, I hope you take away the lesson of helping somebody in need," said Bush, who arrived toward the end of the concert after Scallions' remark. "And when you do, it will not only make our country a better place, it will lift up your own spirit."

Let’s get realistic here…top Republicans and their children don’t usually serve in the military! That’s old school thinking. Now they just send over other people’s kids. That’s just crazy talk, sending the youth of Washington’s elite to fight. What will you come up with next? Suggesting the Bush administration be held accountable for their actions?

In addition to solemn dedications to wars present and past, the event featured comedy routines, including imitations of former President Clinton and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld by "Saturday Night Live" cast member Darrell Hammond and a Top 10 list of "signs that your commanding officer is nuts" delivered via videotape from late-night, talk-show host David Letterman.

33. Is "Hillary Duff" an actual person? I've seen the name and thought it was
some kind of lame insult invented by the wingnuts for Hillary Clinton...
???
:wtf:

At least as real as the Hollywood pop tart machine makes them.

39. Yet another sign of Christianity schizoid
Bush brags about Christian values so he'll get the far right-wing vote but then allows this language. Well Cheney, used the language and the fundamentalist Christians forgave him, so why not. True schizoids.

Generally, real Republican frat boys listen to hard rock, do drugs have un-safe sex, etc.

Of course, they cant show THAT, so they have this fake BS that no one wants to see...

70. their frat parties still suck, though
;)

sure they buy expensive drugs, but often they get either primo (rare) or absolute slag quality, with often the absolute slag being the norm. i mean, who wouldn't want to scam a young republican? they can keep their tame debauchery; they should leave it to professionals, like us liberals.
:evilgrin:

Somthing inherently wrong with people who have to pay dues to hang out with each other.

85. if i have to watch Top Gun or hear it's soundtrack one more time....
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 08:45 AM by NuttyFluffers
;) i'm sure you can finish the sentence! :7 it's as if they actively seek the worst music available -- as long as there's a flag behind it. i honestly think a good number of them are tone deaf, i can't figure out another explanation.

i've never seen a more dour bunch of 'patriotic cheerleaders' in my life. they never seem at peace, perhaps they are competing even still with their frat brothers. never hung out beyond a few of their shitty parties. to have a life of unending competition, aggression, and backbiting, i'd be a sourpuss myself too.

You'd figured they at least ship in folks to make it look like folks wanted to attend

51. Apparently, they DID.
From an article posted in a previous reply:

'While the message was positive, the concert's cool quotient was in question.

"I guess it would be a cool concert if you're a 17-year-old girl," said Roy Trakin, senior editor of Hits magazine.

Not really, said Millicent Bolin, 17-year-old from New Orleans. Many in the audience were on school trips, and some weren't thrilled that the concert was on their itinerary.'

71. even with shanghai'd people they could only get 1/2 full
and considering how it must be inflated, the room was probably less full than that. that's pretty bad.

even with unwilling participants they get such a sparcely populated party. that is sadder beyond belief

60. Another miserable failure
If you can only fill 1/8th of the armory even with kids forced to attend. Then force feed them Hilary Duff. I don't even know her stuff, but I can imagine. :puke:

I feel sorry for Fuel and 3 Doors Down for having to line up with BFEE. Of course in * america, one needs all income you can get.

What no loyalty oaths?

who are so proud of Bush* and his policies, in Iraq putting their lives on the line for what they believe in, instead of at some youth concert? Hypocrits, every last one of them.

74. Considering the location of the DC armory
...which is IIRC, not too far from RFK, I doubt all those "Young Republicans" would want to be seen in that part of town.

Do republicans even listen to the radio? You gotta say one thing though- we Democrats know how to throw a party. This is a 40 million dollar "Bingo Night" they're having. What's tomorrows line-up? Wayne Newton opening for Ashlee Simpson?
