Budget balancing act: 1-year TAX INCREASE (Indiana - Mitch Daniels)
Mitch Daniels, now Gov of IN, is former Bush budget director.

State of the State Address
Budget balancing act: 1-year tax increase
Curbed spending on education, health care would help balance budget in 1 year, governor says.

January 19, 2005

Hoosiers with taxable incomes of more than $100,000 would pay a temporary 1 percent surtax on this year's income under a proposal made Tuesday night by Gov. Mitch Daniels to help eliminate the state's deficit.

The added tax would bring the state $290 million, earmarked for next year's estimated $645 million budget hole, Daniels said in his first State of the State speech.

...

Daniels, who kept details of his plan secret until shortly before he delivered the televised speech, which he wrote himself, pledged not to go further in asking Hoosiers to dig into their pockets so Indiana could dig its way out of a deficit. "I will veto any attempt to raise general taxes on our citizens and any attempt to extend for even one day the one temporary measure I reluctantly propose tonight," Daniels said, as legislators sat silently.

The tax increase, payable in 2006, would apply to income earned this year. About 6 percent, or 177,800, of Indiana's tax filers had adjustable gross incomes of more than $100,000 in 2002, according to Internal Revenue Service statistics.
...

"The wolf is not at the door, he is inside the cabin," Daniels said.

Most Democrats didn't clap at all during the half-hour speech. ...

...

Daniels' plan also calls for trimming at least $225 million from the projected growth of the $4.65 billion Medicaid program over the next two years. No details were given on how those cuts would be made or whom they would affect. ...

2. incomes of more than $100,000 would pay a temporary 1 percent surtax
Otherwise known as a (slightly) modified version of John Kerry's plan.

Funny how Kerry's math works out for bitch* daniels in Indiana, but somehow doesn't translate to all of America?

A 1-year 1% surtax will raise $290 million. But supply-siders say that raising taxes DECREASES revenue while decreasing taxes INCREASES revenue!

I also like how bitch* daniels feigns budgetary control by lying like this; "I will veto any attempt to raise general taxes on our citizens and any attempt to extend for even one day the one temporary measure I reluctantly propose tonight," Daniels said, as legislators sat silently.

Also the budget hole is $645 million, but bitch* only wants to raise $290 million of that. How else is he gonna gut the social spending in his state? I mean if the temporary surtax was 2.22%, he could close the budget gap in one fell swoop! And if he really wanted to get jiggy with it a 3% temporary surtax (Or 1% for 3 years) he could INCREASE funding for education or healthcare or whatever Indianans were most in need of!

That's not to say there isn't any spending that could be cut, but bitch* will go for the social stuff first regardless.

Regardless as in, cut Medicaid and then watch as people move from preventative healthcare to emergency room "health"care and see state and local budgets go bust with even greater frequency!

God, I deplore you. These guys are ACHING for the rapture to come get them, any way to step that up and truly save us ALL?
