The virus, called Cabir, has spread slowly into 12 countries and marks the beginning of the mobile phone virus era, which could one day disrupt the lives of many of the world's 1.5 billion mobile phone users.

The biggest impact of the relatively innocuous virus, found in about 15 variations so far, is draining mobile phone batteries, said Mikko Hypponen, director of Finnish anti-virus research company F-Secure

1. It had to happen sooner or later......
Guess we will have to purchase more expensive, corrupt software from Norton/Symantec to stop it all.

Ya gotta luv those rebates you never get back from them.

Thanks Peter!

2. I know they are great for people with special needs (single working
mothers, for instance); but from this old curmudgeon's point of view, good riddance!

8. I will say welcome to the DU, Blue to the bone. Love the screen name!
So there are three of us in America without cell phones? Think we might be the last humans without brain cancer?

12. Does having an ancient (4 yr old) phone on a pre-paid plan
that cost less than $10 a month, no camera, no Internet connection count?

13. Isn't this a matter of national security?
Don't the Washington big wigs and the military use mobile phones?

Has the Dept. of Homeland security prepared anything for this?

What if there's a natural disaster or a terrorist attack? Can a mobile phone virus impact first responders and relief agencies?

15. Pretty sure Firefighters rely on VHF hand-held radios, not wireless phones

16. Okay that's good.
But I'm pretty sure I donated my old phone to the Red Cross last year.

I assume they wanted it for their use, rather than for sale on ebay.

17. A small heads up: It's now the Dept of Fatherland Security.

And John 'Himler' Negroponte is in charge of the whole thing.

Lucky us.
