Fallujah the safest place in Iraq, says US
Fallujah the safest place in Iraq, says US
(Filed: 19/02/2005)

In pictures: Fight for Fallujah

There is a phrase American officers have started using to describe the battered streets of Fallujah. They are calling it the safest place in Iraq.

Children studying in Fallujah

Four months after the US military swept through the city in the biggest urban offensive since the Vietnam war, the insurgents who once controlled the city and used it as a springboard for violence elsewhere have gone. Attacks on American or Iraqi security forces are few.

Roughly a fifth of the population, about 50,000 people, have returned to see if their houses were destroyed in the fighting.

They are obliged to wait for hours at American checkpoints to be searched and frustrations are as high as the expectations that the US military will rebuild their shattered city as effectively as they levelled large parts of it.

(snip)

The destruction left the city without power and water for weeks, a ghost town of rotting corpses and sewage-filled streets. Services have returned only sporadically.

"Basically, we emptied out the city and let the people back in one by one," said Major Wade Weems, who commands one of two marine reconstruction teams. "We've purified the town of every insurgent element."

Ya think Bushie, Rummy, and crew would care to sip coffee at a sidewalk cafe?

30. Well, the purification hasn't fully kicked in yet
It will take a while for depleted uranium to fully irradiate the population.

The children still have ample time to enjoy childhood playing in the dust and rubble before they begin the serious task of terrorist training. By that time the purification will be well advanced and the 'insurgent element' will have defeated themselves.

Mission accomplished! Whoops  that statement was a bit premature... like I said before, it will take a while yet.

6. When we were kids and wanted to hide from the bullies, the graveyard
was the only place we felt safe.

Wasn't there a huge battle in the cemetery in Falluja? Isn't it much bigger today?

13. The town has been "purified"
Western man has rid the village of evil. And the children can sleep tight knowing their protectors will keep them safe.

And then there is the Iraqi girl, hands soaked in her dead father's blood, whose little brother does not yet understand that his childhood has just come to an end. Fearing for their lives, US soldiers killed the parents in the front seat of the family car. Demons will likely haunt their nights. Stuff happens. Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz, bless their souls, will sleep well tonight.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

14. Sick MoFos.
The "insurgents" were not hanging around for the bombing campaign. They hit the trail as soon as the word got out they were coming for them. All that was left to kill was the innocents. Gunned down in their beds, on the streets, in the hospitals. Left rotting in the streets for the abandoned dogs to dine on.

Now the citizens who survived are let back in one by one, to a scene of utter devastation. In their own country, they are forced to prove to the Americans that they belong in their own city.

22. If only the people responsible for this nightmare will be exposed
with nowhere to hide, and no one to defend them. No one should be able to call up hell upon others, to be delivered by others while he/she sits hidden behind miles of security and human shields.

Any crook apparently can get his faction to buy him into power, and conduct his filthy business from the highest office in our country. Isn't that odd? What in this system is worthy of our allegiance?

respect. Heaven help you if the originators ever get one hold on you.

"we built this city". You are so wrong! And so out of line.

29. The post meant the young soldiers
Like in Michael Moore's movie--the Liberators were getting fired up on heavy metal so they could go off and grease a few "Rag-Heads"

That's how I took it

It has nothing to do with starship or grace slick or whoever.

24. I have never hurt so much in all my life and I am 47 years old.
I knew this was going to happen to this suburb the day in April of 2003. I looked to my husband and told him they would level this town. It was all over that day. The day they fired into the crowd that were protesting, just asking in a peaceful way for our "troops" to leave the school.

I'm so sorry for what we have allowed to happen. I live in Texas, I can only imagine what if it had happened in Richardson? A town/suburb of Dallas, of 240,000+ just simply wiped out? My heart breaks every day.

Please Forgive us. I'm so sorry.
