U.N. refugee chief Lubbers quits over sex allegations
GENEVA - Former Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers said he resigned Sunday as head of the United Nations refugee agency, citing media pressure over allegations against him of sexual harassment.

Lubbers, who took over as High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at the start of 2001, was accused last year of sexually harassing a female employee, but U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan decided against taking any action after an investigation.

The case re-emerged last Friday after Britain’s Independent newspaper published details of the allegation.

“I resign as High Commissioner,” Lubbers said in a letter to Annan, which was sent to news agencies.
