Rice Sees Evidence Syria-Based Group Behind Bombing (of Tel Aviv niteclub)
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 02:30 PM by Cooley Hurd

LONDON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice cited what she called "firm evidence" on Tuesday that the Islamic Jihad militant group helped plan last week's Tel Aviv suicide bombing from Syria.
"There is firm evidence that Palestinian Islamic Jihad, sitting in Damascus, not only knew about the attacks, but was involved in the planning," Rice told ABC News in an interview according to an excerpt provided by the U.S. television network.

Friday's bombing outside a Tel Aviv nightclub killed five Israelis, shattering a de facto truce by Palestinian militant groups and casting a shadow over Tuesday's conference in London supporting Palestinian security and government reforms.

Speaking to ABC on the sidelines of the conference, Rice ratcheted up pressure on Syria to cease its alleged support for both Palestinian militant groups and Iraqi insurgents and to withdraw its 14,000 troops from Lebanon.

"There is evidence that Islamic Jihad, headquartered in Syria, was in fact involved with the planning of those attacks in Tel Aviv. And so the Syrians have a lot to answer for," Rice told ABC.

... how did the US get this "firm" evidence? Did the Israelis invite in the CIA or the FBI? Or did the US get this evidence from someone else? If so, from whom?

Why does this evidence fit so neatly into the rhetoric being used by the US recently? Given that a group unrelated to Syria has already accepted responsibility for the bombing, what compelling evidence proves otherwise (the assertion that because Islamic Jihad has offices in Syria that they are supported by Syria is hardly a credible one--most countries and groups in the Middle East have offices in Damascus)?

Just asking.

Now that Arafat's (mysteriously) dead, Syria has become Israeli public enemy #1. Then Iran. Then we pretty much own the entire Middle East--assuming we have the wherewithal to occupy it for generations. Which, of course, we don't.

42. kinda figured that Israel would bomb Iran nukes first
but bombing Syria works too -- either way Iran or Syria will retailiate and then general yee-haawww will have to use the excuse that we have to go to the defense of Israel

originally I thought we wouldn't "liberate" Iran or Syria until next year so it could be used as a stump issue for mid-terms - but now it's looking like it's going to be sooner rather than later

Invade Iran? Ridiculous.....we'll invade Syria first, provoke Iran into aiding Syria and then invade Iran

Or was it the real firm evidence, like say, OBL all but taking out a full-page ad in the Times saying, "We are coming on 9-11. Get ready to rock and roll."? Because it seems to me that these people live in Fantasyland, where they wouldn't know firm evidence if it bit them in the ass.

and all day they've been doing the Syria did it and the bin Ladin/Zaqahiwi are pen pals thing.

I wanted to see what it was like during the day on CNN, to see if it was as crappy and jingoistic as pre Shock and Awe (which, being as naive and stupid as I am, really didn't believe we'd attack). The old Soviet Union has NOTHING on the bush** propaganda machine. And the media bears no resemblance to a true and honest system to disemminate information.

This has been a joke. I'm glad I had a good book.

edit: I've been trying to figure out all day why, if they can intercept the messages of these two guys, can't they find them? Or why are they trying to tell people that they've intercepted their communications but they can't prove it, don't know where they are, or anything else? Or is it only me that thinks these people are really clumsy and stupid liars?

April 15, 1986: US launches air strikes on Libya

At least 100 people have died after USA planes bombed targets in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and the Benghazi region. Around 66 American jets, some of them flying from British bases launched an attack at around 0100hrs on Monday. The White House spokesman, Larry Speakes, has said that the strike was directed at key military sites but reports suggest that missiles also hit Bin Ashur, a densely populated suburb in the capital.

Colonel Muamar Gaddafi residential compound took a direct hit that killed Hanna Gaddafi, the adopted baby daughter of the Libyan leader.
President Reagan has justified the attacks by accusing Libya of direct responsibility for terrorism aimed at America, such as the bombing of La Belle discoteque in West Berlin 10 days ago.

<snip>

The Americans hit the harbour's naval academy, the capital's military airport and army barracks. Tripoli's embassy area and residential districts also suffered extensive damage. The Tripoli central hospital and two other medical centres say they have treated hundreds of injured people, including a number of Greeks, Italians and Yugoslavs.

Mobs of angry survivors have taken to the streets shouting: "Down, down USA. Death to all Americans." There are also fears that Britain may be subject to terrorist attacks because some of its involvement in the raids. The Syrian based terrorist group, Arab Revolutionary Cells, has announced on Lebanese radio that it will target both British and American interests.

In Context
President Reagan said he had irrefutable evidence that Libya was responsible for the West Berlin night club bombing on 5 April 1986 which killed two American servicemen and a Turkish woman.
The British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, justified Britain's involvement in the campaign by supporting America's right to self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

The extremist group Arab Revolutionary Cells said it murdered two British and one American hostage in Lebanon on 17 April 1986, in retaliation for the US attack.

Fifteen years after the air raids, a German court ruled that the Libyan secret service was responsible for the West Berlin bomb attack.

In September 2004, Libya agreed to pay $35m to 150 non-US victims of the 1986 Berlin disco bomb.

Libya said it will not pay for US victims until Washington compensates it for the lives and property lost in the subsequent US air strikes on Libya.
