Same-sex marriage foes set broader agenda
This is another Kansas story, but it mirrors the path the RW is taking in other states, too.

Conservatives target abortion, evolution, adoptions by gays

Topeka — Now that Kansas voters have changed the state constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage, what's next?

The Rev. Terry Fox of Wichita, one of the primary supporters of the same-sex marriage ban, said Christians have been energized by the debate over same-sex marriage and they are eager to flex their political muscles.

"This has awakened the body of Christ," Fox said.

A recent study by the Urban Institute ranked Kansas 45th nationally for the per capita rate of gay couples, with just under 4,000 couples among the state's 2.68 million residents. But Kansas ranked eighth in the percentage of same-sex couples -- about one-third -- who have a child under 18 in the household.

Personally, I found "This has awakened the body of Christ" to be a singularly creepy phrase... :scared:

16. "body of Christ" refers to all the people who believe in Christ.
Jesus already did a perfectly good job of rising from the dead, 2000 years ago.

The "muscles" they developed beating up on a small, virtually defenseless minority? They're in for a surprise, methinks.

9. Is it just me?
How do these people justify their bigotry and small mindedness and hatred and delusions of superiority as the teachings of Christ?!?! Jesus did not teach intolerance!
Frankly, If I were God I'd be pretty pissed off at what's being promoted in my name.

when I was a freshman in college. I'm from Nebraska originally, which is considered behind the times by anyone from either coast. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Kansas is, in fact, more back assward than Nebraska, which was somewhat comforting.

The fact that they're clamoring for a new Dark Ages is not great shock. They weren't too far off when I was in school there in '84. ;-)

13. Ah, Kansas. This may explain something
Greatgrandpa/ma packed up the youngest 8 of 10 kids and came to CA in 1908 from Kansas. In a covered wagon, because they were too poor to take a train. Sounds like they made a good decision.

The witch-hunts aren't far behind.
Evolution under attack now- what's next- they'll start questioning that the Earth isn't the center of the Universe?
I tremble to think that the state of science in this country, already horrible compared to our other developed democracies, could sink even further.
Photosynthesis- my god, that's the work of SATAN!
DNA? That a lie the DEVIL scientists put out- God is the hereditary unit of transmission, not some HEATHEN double stranded nucleic acid!
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

professors. Academic Bill of Rights, or some such Orwellian bullshit. That's how they are attacking science and learning.

I guess affirmative action for white males is ok in their books, since most conservatives would be white males.

33. Universities tend to have a more "liberal" faculty ...
... because their conservative counterparts go into big business where they can pull down paychecks that are at least 10 or 20 times what those pesky liberal professors make. Do they really think they can convince the cons to take a pay cut?

Then you have the conservative universities (Bob Jones University and a few others come to mind). I think if they are going to demand more conservative college professors, we should demand Bob Jones University, Falwell's Heritage University, etc., hire some flaming knee-jerk liberals in a show of good faith.

24. Man, that Terry Fox has definitely had his fifteen minutes of fame.
Time for people to stop quoting him. I never want to stain my beautiful mind with thoughts of him again.

Unfortunately, the results of the latest battle will only encourage him, he will try to grow his congregation, and maximize his profits (by writing articles, getting more put into the church coffers, up his salary).

Disappointing to see such craziness pay off.

But GOOD (open, welcoming, affirming) values will win out - when the Great Backlash against the Religious Right comes up in full color; I think that it is starting to happen already.

25. Wait, I think there's a mistake here...
Didn't the article miss the part about "reintroducing hang-draw-quartering" and changing the state motto to "The power of Christ compels YOU!... The power of Christ compels YOU!..."

Also, not to stir up any dust here, but in another thread, was there not a chiding to lay off Kansas because it's actually a very liberal place? I'm just asking...

30. Well, there are Kansas liberals HERE who might have asked people to
lay off Kansas, because Kansas liberals have their hands full enough these days as it is. ;) Believe me, we're trying...

I hope Phill Kline isn't reading this thread. He would LOVE your idea for a new state slogan!

Its KANSAS for god sakes which makes FL look like Mass. If they want a state thocracy LET THEM. Then everyone ELSE will LEAVE and probably rant about what went on. Or it could be like 1992 all over again when Poppa 1 unleashed them from the box but then they had to go back in.
