Cheney earned $194,852 in deferred compensation from Halliburton in 2004
WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney may be No. 2 at the White House, but he surpassed his boss last year when it came to earnings and taxable income.

On their 2004 federal income-tax returns, which the White House released Friday, the vice president and his wife, Lynne Cheney, reported $1,328,678 in earnings last year, which produced a $393,518 tax bill. They paid $290,855 through withholding and estimated tax payments. They paid the remaining $102,663 when they filed their return Friday.

. . .

Although Cheney's income was nearly twice Bush's, Cheney's average rate of taxation - 29.6 percent - was lower than Bush's, which was 30.8 percent. That's because Cheney had a large amount of charitable deductions and other itemized deductions.

On their return, the Cheneys listed his $203,000 government salary and $194,852 in deferred compensation he received from the Halliburton Co., where he was chief executive officer from 1995 to 2000. Cheney struck a deal with the oil giant in December 1998 to have his 1999 salary paid in fixed annual installments - including interest - over a five-year period after his retirement from the company. The White House stressed in a written statement that Cheney's decision to defer compensation was final and unalterable "before Mr. Cheney left Halliburton."

. . .

In addition to his Halliburton income and White House salary, the Cheney family income was boosted by Lynne Cheney's salary from the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative research center, and compensation from Readers Digest, where she served on the board of directors until her retirement in 2003.

4. True, I learned that Bush owned the Texas Rangers(Baseball team)
And was paid 15 Million for the team. When they were Washington Senators then moved to texas and became the Rangers in the late 70's.
The both of them have their hands hidden in many places and in oil in one of them. Those jerks:grr:

10. How much as Halliburton received from us since the beginning of the
war.

here's a letter I sent to the editor.

According to Dick Cheney's 2004 tax return he earned $194,852 in deferred compensation from Halliburton. Looking at the billions of our tax dollars being thrown at Halliburton, it seems that the $194,852 was a good investment on Halliburton's part.

3. Gee, Halliburton had no trouble with prior over-reported earnings!!!!
Maybe they had a bunch of money-making government contracts that kept any over-statements from coming to light. All, they would have needed was a GROUND WAR somewhere in the world, and Cheney would continue to receive ill-gotten gains, like a million a year until the over-statements were all paid. (Cut those pesky attack missles Clinton used, just in case someone else tries a war that would not be a GROUND WAR.)

This could be the last payment (the other years was it a million a year?) of Halliburton's protection from having a going out of business sale. Don't pay Cheney a salary, just defer his payments so if they do go under, Cheney payments go with it.

Can you say quid pro quo? I bet Cheney can, BUT WON'T.

9. They've succeeded in framing this with the wrong question
They say that since Cheney isn't getting extra money from Halliburton now, there is no conflict of interest. What about all the money he received from Halliburton before?

Halliburton took Cheney on when he knew nothing about the oil services business. They paid him $25 million. Cheney returned the favor by almost bankrupting the company. Cheney owes Halliburton. He's been paying them back with lives and money from the public trust.

11. Tax people, do the Cheney's owe a penalty for underestimating
their tax? $102,000 seems like a big chunk to be paying on April 15th.

14. Well.... he did give quite a bit of this dough to charity... then again
if you give to charity, you minimize your tax burden... so all that is, is not what it seems to be. Righto... move along... nothing here at all..... :)

15. Do they really think that the American people are so stupid?
We know that both men are millionaires many times over. Just because they are not in direct control of those millions while they serve *cough-cough* their country through public office doesn't mean they aren't interested (purposeful double entendre) !!

I wish they would just stop trying to flimflam the average Joe with whom neither of them can possibly identify.
