Republicans Log 1 Million New Donors
WASHINGTON - The Republican Party has reached a milestone in its record fund raising: 1 million new donors since President Bush took office.

In all, since President Bush took office in January 2001, 1,305,000 people have donated to the Republican National Committee for the first time, spokeswoman Christine Iverson said Wednesday.

That beats the party's previous record of 853,595 first-time donors during President Reagan's eight years in office in the 1980s. New contributors then were reached mostly through direct mail and phone banks, Iverson said.

The average contribution of the new RNC donors so far during Bush's tenure is $29.80, Iverson said. The party reached out to the contributors through a combination of mail, phones and the Internet, she said.

From January through August, the most recent totals available, the RNC raised $69.5 million, compared to about $26.3 million for the DNC.

In addition to the new small-dollar donors, the RNC has also raised record amounts at big fund-raisers headlined by Bush. It will likely raise millions at a gala next week featuring the president.

2. Why do I have trouble swollowing this story?
I just can't believe it.....that small donations are flooding the RNC...the little guys are too cheap to donate and they know that the big guns always come thru.

4. I just made my first time donation to the DNC
Normally I donate (and we're talking pretty small donations) only to certain candidates and groups (e.g., NARAL,NRDC). But for the first time, I am realizing we need the organizational power to counter the RNC.

7. Note, what the RNC is stating is most likely verifiable through the FEC.

8. If so, its very sad
that there are so many people deluded enough to think the GOP has or will do anything that will help them live better lives. Do they not see that the times are getting worse, not better. Oh well. I'm resigned to not seeing humanity better itself in my lifetime. The only hope we have is for a far wiser civilization from outer space to teach us a lesson.

11. The DNC had better get
connected. A republican family member gave me a subscription to National Review (peeew) and I was immediately hit up for RNC donation, and not just one but many. My subscription to Harper's yeilded only a membership request from the ACLU.

12. You're right
My dh and I registered repub once so we could vote for John Anderson in the primaries against Reagan. We got fundraising mail from them constantly. I've only just recently started receiving e-mails from the DNC. I don't think I've ever received a piece of snail mail from them.

Re: the new donors. Is it outlined when those donations came in? I can easily believe lots of little people donated earlier...say after 9/11. But I imagine that will have stopped by now.

13. donations
Uh huh... And how many of those were between 9/11 and the War on Iraq? Bush and his cronies manipulated nationalistic fervor amazingly well. That they suckered people into giving them money is only understandable.
