Mrs. Bush Raises Press Freedom on Russia Trip

"With Lyudmila Putin looking on, Mrs. Bush told students, "this festival is...a celebration of freedom, the freedom to write what we want, to write and read the books that we want to read."

The comments reflected U.S. concerns over what Washington says is government pressure on the Russian media and a concentration of ownership, a senior U.S. official traveling with Mrs. Bush said.

<snip>

"As you all know, the president doesn't like leaks to come out of the White House...he expects the very highest ethics from everyone who works at the White House," she said."

Maybe she could give the media over here some tips....

3. Perchance she should extol the virtues of such freedoms to her hubby...

...and his manservant JohnBOY Aschcroft. As I recall Ms. librarian saw no problem with the provisions of the (UN)Patriot(IC) Act allowing access to one's library records without having to demonstrate probable cause of their relationship to criminal activity.

As for the leak part that is hysterically funny. I realize she was just reading the preplanned script but that is in itself funny. Had she been candid she would have said that "No leaks are to be tolerated except those which are deliberately planned for my husband's own beneficial political purposes."

7. Recognize Laura Bush's specific library background...
As a school librarian - unfortunately, many school libraries in this country are bastions of censorship.

It is mostly public and academic (college, graduate school) libraries that are leading the charge against the Patriot Act. I'm a public librarian.

6. Ah yes the council's practicing of freedom to suppress.
Paving the way for a no bid media monopoly contract to Fox News Iraq no doubt!

10. Why does she TALK like that?
Mrs. Bush told students, "this festival is...a celebration of freedom, the freedom to write what we want, to write and read the books that we want to read."

Doesn't she realize she sounds like she's on barbituates, or an eight-year old reading? I hope she doesn't SOUND as bad.
