Feds can't find SSI checks (TN)
<snip> Both the Social Security Administration and the Post Office are trying to track down the checks, but as they do, real people are waiting and worrying. <snip>

Well you get a check at the same time every month. You get it a little early if the first of the month comes on a weekend, so everybody knew they should get it on Friday it didn't come. They don't deliver that kind of check on a Saturday, and today it didn't come. The question in my mind was where are they,” says Arlene. <snip>

"No we haven't seen any SSI checks that were supposed to arrive on Friday. We haven't heard much from the Social Security Administration. They said if you don't see them by the morning give them a call," says Frank Chmielewicz, Postmaster Oak Ridge.

The Post Office is in charge of investigating for three days. If they checks aren't found by Tuesday backup checks will be issued. <snip>

1. That's why I have direct deposit....
trust the USPS with my money? I don't think so. I pity these poor folks, many live check to check and any delay will mean a major hassle.

4. My dad sweats his check every month, and
he refuses to go the direct deposit route. Doesn't trust the bank. I've told him repeatedly that if he wants his check on time, he should sign up for direct deposit, but he's absolutely resistant. At 82, he's not about to change his thinking. Suspect this is the case with many of the hold-outs. Direct deposit should be mandatory. Then no one's check would get lost in the mail.

5. a woman I used to work with has a husband that worked for USPS
he delivered mail to the projects and the like. He told me once that he sat on government checks especially if he was supposed to deliver them on a Friday. He said that it prevented the drug addicts and drunks from being able to spend it on the weekend.

8. it's printed on the envelope the date to deliver
so if they have them on the 2nd, and it says 'deliver on the 3rd' , it's held one day, etc.

9. I don't know about that. I do know that lately my sons' has been in bank
a day late for the past few months. I figured the bank was just floating it an extra day for the interest. But when I got my letter last week for my benefits, it said on or about the 4th Wednesday of the month.

10. my first thought was rove too, because of the potential message this could
send - wold this make those affected say to themselves and each other things like, "maybe there is a crisis with Social Security," or, "well I'd rather get a smaller check than no check at all."

Or maybe I'm just too cynical.

Hopefully those affected will be pissed rather than frightened.

11. My dad has DD on his SSI also. At 79, he loves not going to the bank.
I've had direct deposit ever since I started working in banking 25 years ago. When I became a nurse and started working in a hospital, I had to make an extra trip in the afternoon to pick up my check and then deposit it. What a hassle!

12. SSI is for the very poorest
elderly and disabled who did not have enough work quarters to qualify for disability or retirement(and have very limited assets). They aren't likely to have any reserve in the bank to carry them through the wait for new checks to be issued.

Actually I thought direct deposit was mandatory, don't know why. I see I was wrong. One problem might be a lot of banks have fees without a minimum amount in the account, even if it is a savings account.

13. There Usually Aren't Any Banks in "That Part of Town"...
...just "check cashing companies" that charge ridiculous fees.
They are owned by the banks, of course.

Business as usual in the banking industry.
The less you have, the more they charge you.
