Taliban making its way back in Afghanistan
Taliban making its way back in Afghanistan

Syed Saleem Shahzad - Asia Times Wednesday 4th May, 2005

The US, content in the belief that all support systems for the Taliban had been withdrawn and their financial lifelines completely dried up - and with moderate Taliban being drawn into the mainstream political fold in Afghanistan - has been shocked by a new phase of fierce Taliban resistance this spring.

The visits of Lieutenant-General David Barno, commander of US troops in Afghanistan, and chief of US Central Command, General John Abizaid, to Islamabad and their insistence that Pakistan restart a powerful campaign against al-Qaeda and the Taliban is the result of a new realization that the Taliban problem is back to square one.

Not only are the Taliban primed in the latest techniques in guerrilla warfare, they have also got their hands on fresh resources - both in terms of personnel and supplies - which the US had believed were choked off.

What have we really accomplished here!!!

1. Americans are really fucking clueless
The Taliban didn't succeed because they were organized and funded, they succeeded because people bought into their ideology. Ideologies are based on the people, not on the leaders. If we want to destroy the Taliban, we have to do one of two things: kill a large percentage of the population, or change their ideology. I doubt we could do either. So far all we've done is piss off Afghanis so badly they are looking for anyone who can stand up to us.

Wars are always this way. What's surprising is that our idiot leaders are surprised by one of the most certain phenomena in world history.

This is the nation that brought down the second greatest military in the world 15 years ago. Now they are working on the greatest.

2. I'm shocked...
if the Taliban would get back into power in Afghanistan, they might reduce the amount of heroine that's produced in Afghanistan again, like they did shortly before the war. The CIA might get sad 'cause they don't know how to get their dirty money from to buy weapons and finance their illegal and criminal actions. The U.S. puppet regime does so much better and has highered the heroine-production to an all-time high again.

Sarcasm off,
Hello from Germany,
Dirk

Set up several permanent US bases and secured the pipeline deal cheney has been drooling over for years. Oh yeah, they also had record poppy field growth over the last three years as well.
