UNSC: US warns India not to seek veto power

New York May 15: The United States has warned India and three other nations campaigning for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council that it will not support their cause unless they agree not to ask for the veto power, senior US officials were today quoted as saying.

“The one clear statement to come from Washington is the warning about veto power” sought by India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, said New York Times quoting senior diplomats and administration officials.

“Administration officials said they were opposed to giving new members veto power out of concern that it might paralyse the Security Council,” the daily said.

The United States’ view of the Group of Four’s effort remains uncertain, leading some diplomats to worry that Washington may actually oppose expanding the Security Council because it would dilute American power, the daily said.

1. Uh, then they wouldn't be permanent seats, now would they?
Hmph. Regardless, the "One veto kills all action" rule is stupid to begin with, no matter how many seats there are. That needs to change first before anything else with the Security Council.

2. That POS* said the UN is irrelevant.
The POS* shouldn't care who's on the UNSC.

3. there shoudn't be a security council in the first place
The UN should be about all the world's countries coming together to vote on issues. a simple majority should decide the course of action, and not this insidious system where the general assembly is nothing but a bazaar and the security council - where the 5 veto wielding powers are all-powerful - a device to perpetuate imperialist impulses.

4. Why should a UN member like Liechtenstein with 33,000 citizens have
the same vote as China with 1.3 billion citizens?

5. If you want to base voting on population
last time I checked India had a lot more people than the US.

7. The post said "a simple majority should decide the course of action".
Do you believe that Liechtenstein and other micro size countries in the UN should have the same vote as large countries?

11. Same reason
Rhode Island has the same number of votes in the Senate as California.

That's why it is United Nations.

15. I understand and the biggest disparity is Wyoming with
500,000 people versus California with over 35 million.

16. Warns? The U.S. "warns"? Give me a fucking break.
What are they going to do if India, a nation of only a billion or so, asks for a security council seat and the veto which it should have by rights--hit them on the knuckles with a pointer or a ruler? Invade? Veto a request by India for a seat on the Sec. Council?
