TRIBUNE/WGN-TV POLL

Illinois still sour on Bush
Social Security plan, Iraq war eroding core support in state

By Mark Silva
Washington Bureau
Published May 16, 2005

WASHINGTON -- President Bush's handling of the economy and sagging support for the war in Iraq have caused his support to erode further in Illinois since last fall, when he won re-election but lost the state to his Democratic rival by a wide margin.

Approval of the president's overall performance--41 percent in a statewide Tribune/WGN-TV poll--has slipped even in Chicago's collar counties and Downstate, which were once more likely to back Bush. A similar poll last October showed Bush's job approval rating at 45 percent.

And while most voters throughout Illinois are convinced that the solvency of Social Security poses a problem that should be addressed by next year, fewer people express confidence in the ability of either Bush or leaders of either party in Congress to fix the problem, the survey reveals.

Most oppose the president's plan to allow younger workers to invest some of their Social Security taxes in private accounts, according to the poll.

3. Illinois should be the epicenter of the Democratic Party.
We are the flyover country that the right says the left disdains. Our economy isn't booming here and we have lots of problems. However, most midwest people are laden with common sense and we know a charlatan when we see one.

4. I was at an organizing meeting in Evanston on Saturday
Us KerryTraveler types are getting together to coordinate efforts to make Illinois GOP-Free. This is the kind of news I like to see. We're going to target three seats in the collar counties, and maybe even downstate, and pour volunteers into those campaigns. Most dems in those districts run with a staff of about 10 and 30 volunteers. Suddenly on weekends they'll have a hundred extra people to knock on doors, make calls, put up posters, pay for mailings and so on.

And this is the sort of thing that gives us ammo.

6. Shopping, I overheard 2 Korean War Vets, "Afghanistan was 1 thing but
they're, (Bush Adm.), totally out of control now." I pretended I was looking at items as I listened in for several minutes. I heard them say they served in Korea. They mentioned Bush in another sentence so I know the above quote is correct.

I posted a few weeks ago about the Oregon National Guard I met who was never for war with Iraq. He's been to 23 countries and loves every country he's visited. He said, in a way, Americans are ignorant. "We wouldn't be killing people in other countries if they had ever gone over and met some of these people."

(Above near bigger open minded thinking and honest city, (I guess Media Whores would call it a "liberal city".))

I live in a very small rual town, (one gas station). Supposedly this town was about equal to Southern Redneck Repuke Delay stronghold. I only see one pickup with a "Bush 04" sticker on. But what gets me is that 70% of the people I talk to never supported aWol in the first place.

I sure hope Democratic henchmen visit forums like the DU. I don't write this stuff as made up. Not only it's dishonest but what good what it do anyway? I sure hope the Dem henchmen get their act together and start investigating because I honestly, 100%, believe there is massive voting fraud in every state, county and city in America. We have a track record of thousands of times Repukes and Fundimentalist Christians lying and cheating in every type of situation from Gov. to business. We have proof of thousands of murders committed. Why wouldn't they "change" the outcome of an election?

For 5 years meeting Americans from/in Asia to Western USA I just don't see where the people came from who supposedly gave aWol and GOP candidates their totals.

7. Proud Illinoisan (sp)
Born in Lakeview (Wrigleyville to you out of towners) and now live in Will County. Most of my blue collar brethren hate Bush and his horrible policies. But nearly half love the idiot. Talk about deaf dumb and blind. At least most of Illinois see the stupid evil chimp for what he is.
