PHILADELPHIA - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged the University of Pennsylvania's graduating class on Monday to use their talents and optimism to fight for the "larger freedom" of democracy, security and human rights for all people of the world.
"Do not think you can look away from the injustice, the suffering, or the lack of true freedom that is the lot of so many people in the world today," Annan told the 6,000 graduates and their families at Penn's Franklin Field. "Your future becomes their future. The cause of larger freedom should be your cause." <snip>
"I know you are all looking at me and thinking, 'There's no way he's going to be as good as Bono.' And you're right," Annan said to the crowd, which erupted in laughter.
He reiterated Bono's statement at last year's commencement that the United States is not just a country, but an idea, and drew a parallel with the United Nations. <snip>
