Galloway vs. The US Senate: Transcript of Statement
http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0517-35.htm

delivered this statement to US Senators today who have accused him of corruption

"Senator, I am not now, nor have I ever been, an oil trader. and neither has anyone on my behalf. I have never seen a barrel of oil, owned one, bought one, sold one - and neither has anyone on my behalf.

"Now I know that standards have slipped in the last few years in Washington, but for a lawyer you are remarkably cavalier with any idea of justice. I am here today but last week you already found me guilty. You traduced my name around the world without ever having asked me a single question, without ever having contacted me, without ever written to me or telephoned me, without any attempt to contact me whatsoever. And you call that justice.

"Now I want to deal with the pages that relate to me in this dossier and I want to point out areas where there are - let's be charitable and say errors. Then I want to put this in the context where I believe it ought to be. On the very first page of your document about me you assert that I have had 'many meetings' with Saddam Hussein. This is false.

"I have had two meetings with Saddam Hussein, once in 1994 and once in August of 2002. By no stretch of the English language can that be described as "many meetings" with Saddam Hussein.

"As a matter of fact, I have met Saddam Hussein exactly the same number of times as Donald Rumsfeld met him. The difference is Donald Rumsfeld met him to sell him guns and to give him maps the better to target those guns. I met him to try and bring about an end to sanctions, suffering and war, and on the second of the two occasions, I met him to try and persuade him to let Dr Hans Blix and the United Nations weapons inspectors back into the country - a rather better use of two meetings with Saddam Hussein than your own Secretary of State for Defense made of his.

"I was an opponent of Saddam Hussein when British and Americans governments and businessmen were selling him guns and gas. I used to demonstrate outside the Iraqi embassy when British and American officials were going in and doing commerce.

A five star performance by Mr. Galloway and anyone that didn't view the hearing should.

71. And how
There was nothing left of slimy little Normie but a pair of smoking shoes with a toupee on top by the time Galloway was done with him. (Don't know if Lick-spittle Norm actually wears a toupee but he has that horrible "Republican" hair that looks fake - like the rest of him - even if it isn't)

I don't know if Galloway is a white knight or not, but anyone who can beat down the Repukes so completely, and with nothing but cold hard facts about the Iraq war, is a hero much needed on this side of the pond. He did a service to the world and the US by reaming Norm the Tool and, by proxy, Commander CuckooBananas' maladministration a couple of new bodily orifices - without anaesthesia. :patriot:

This is FUCKING BRILLIANT!!!

It's EXACTLY what these assholes need to hear, delivered straight up their sphincter muscles. NO ONE ELSE has dared to confront them with their lies and smash those very lies directly back into their faces - and IN PUBLIC. And ON THE RECORD. This guy isn't taking one bit of their huffing and puffing lying down - as our Democrats have thoughtfully and obediently learned to do.

Well, they BETTER DAMNED WELL LEARN THE GALLOWAY OFFENSIVE, AND PUT IT INTO PRACTICE. AND THEY BETTER DO IT NOW.

"Have a look at the real Oil-for-Food scandal. Have a look at the 14 months you were in charge of Baghdad, the first 14 months when $8.8 billion of Iraq's wealth went missing on your watch. Have a look at Halliburton and other American corporations that stole not only Iraq's money, but the money of the American taxpayer."

I hope this gets played OVER AND OVER AND OVER on CNN. (not holding my breath).

44. Oh bullshit.
Carl Levin is one of the most consistent anti-war voices in the Democratic party--much more so than the two Johns.

He just isn't a far, far, far left fringe figure like George Galloway.

People sliming Levin because he doesn't bow down to a false god like Galloway aren't using their brains.

You're talking pure bollocks at the moment.

I didn't call Levin "a Bush flunkie".

I said that if the person who was involved in the libellous report
and the slanderous interview yesterday was the best "anti-war voice
in the Democratic party" (as you claim) then I am not surprised that
BushCo went off to war with such rousing (almost unanimous) support
from Congress & the Senate.

If you view that as being "a Bush flunkie" then so be it but don't
put words into my mouth please.

http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk/investigations/inquiryreports/mariam2.asp

<snip>
12. The Commission has been unable to obtain all the books and records of the Appeal. Mr Galloway, the first Chairman of the Appeal, has stated that this documentation was sent to Amman and Baghdad in 2001 when Fawaz Zuriekat became Chairman of the Appeal. Mr Galloway has informed the Commission that this documentation is no longer under the control of the original trustees of the Appeal and cannot be located by them. Mr Galloway confirmed that the Appeal did not produce annual profit and loss accounts or balance sheets.

Every Galloway thread I go to, there you are making assertions that you can't back up.

And here I go again, having to post the part of that report that you so conveniently and consistently ignore:

http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk/investigations/inquiryreports/mariam2.asp
<snip>20. "The Commission advised the trustees that they had a duty to keep accounting records under trust law and as a charity should have kept and produced accounts in accordance with the provisions of the Act. However given that the founders of the Appeal were unaware that they had created a charity and because the Commission has found no evidence that the funds of the Appeal were misapplied (other than the payment of unauthorised benefits to trustees), the Commission will be taking no further action on this matter."

Let me guess...you still think the WMDs are burried somewhere in Iraq, and/or that they were smuggled to someplace like Syria?

It's the same logic. You can't figure something out, so you make guesses -- ignoring any evidence which would dispute your claim (ie. Where's the money/WMDs?!?!?). Typical repugnant ploy.

81. Here's a phrase you should memorize:
"Absence of evidence is not the same as evidence of absence."

The Commission in no way "proved" that Galloway was innocent. It found that there was no evidence that indicated he was dirty.

As the Commission noted, the Mariam Appeal's books and records were PHYSICALLY REMOVED from the UK and moved to the Mideast, and now Galloway & Co. are claiming that they're lost.

What was in those books and records? Why did they go missing?

Those books and records were not only evidence--they were extremely important and central evidence. And they were physically removed and "lost" under extremely suspicious circumstances.

84. And one for you ...
"Open your f*cking eyes"

To quote from the only piece of "evidence" you have provided to
support your libellous accusations:

> Mr Galloway, the first Chairman of the Appeal, has stated that
> this documentation was sent to Amman and Baghdad in 2001 when
> Fawaz Zuriekat became Chairman of the Appeal.

If you actually read what you have dribbled in every single Galloway
thread so far you would notice not only WHERE the documentation was
sent (Amman and Baghdad) but TO WHOM (Fawaz Zuriekat) and WHY (Galloway
ceased to be the chairman and Zuriekat became the chairman).

Anyone except a Bush-Blair fanatic would understand that the person
that should be questioned is Zuriekat - the chairman who received the
books. The pursuit of Galloway, though an amusing political occupation
for right-wingers, is not going to get you any closer to the current
location of items that he is documented as having passed over to his
successor.

If the subject of this "inquiry" was the large scale fraud, bribery,
corruption and cover-ups connected with the Oil for Food programme
then this "committee" would not need to look beyond the borders of
the USA for the bulk of the financial transactions.

The fact that they prefer to slander and libel a British politician
(without even discussing the subject with him) shows precisely what
a bunch of lying Bush-owned bastards they are.

Nihil

85. Figure out what praeposterous means, moron
I suggest you learn a thing or two before spouting off your irrational opinion.

You need a history lesson regarding sophism, and the problems involved in attempting to prove a negative. This sort of thing is taught in a first semester logic course on just about every campus in the country.

My guess is that the religious conditioning you have received has made your brain quite vulnerable to this very common propagandistic device. Rumsfeld's quote is anathema in philosophy and logic. I have no evidence that you beat your wife, but that's not proof that you don't.

"Senator, in everything I said about Iraq, I turned out to be right and you turned out to be wrong and 100,000 people paid with their lives; 1600 of them American soldiers sent to their deaths on a pack of lies; 15,000 of them wounded, many of them disabled forever on a pack of lies.

If the world had listened to Kofi Annan, whose dismissal you demanded, if the world had listened to President Chirac who you want to paint as some kind of corrupt traitor, if the world had listened to me and the anti-war movement in Britain, we would not be in the disaster that we are in today. Senator, this is the mother of all smokescreens. You are trying to divert attention from the crimes that you supported, from the theft of billions of dollars of Iraq's wealth."

Shame on the American press for not covering one tenth of the corruption and graft to which he points with clear prose.

Any candidate for Pres in the next election who does not SOUND and ACT like this courageous man -- is not worth the vote. Here's the model!

Be still my beating heart. Somebody better be sending him roses.

29. I heard some of this on Air America, on the way to work--OUTSTANDING!!
Mr Galloway, I LOVE YOU

Please let this be an inspiration to our own representatives.

I just might make copies and put them in strategic locations myself.

Sigh, actually there is no good spot, and putting them in
individuals' mail boxes would be overstepping; I'm a known hippie and lefty, it wouldn't take much for people to figure out who to report. Not that anything happens to the frikkin fundies posting jaysus shit all over the place.

sorry, I'm getting angry.

30. What really happened
US Senate got ambushed by their onw infinite hubris and stupidity. Their mud-slinging effort won't make and mud stick that didn't allready, but after making these accusations they had no way to deny Galloway a hearing, a golden opportunity to open his mouth and tell it like it is VERY publicly (and also peel some mud of that had stuck in the public mind).

So they had to eat their own cooking and be humiliated for a minimum amount time, before they could start to try attempting to forget Galloway having been put down like little childen by an unrepentent socialist.

32. I saw Galloway's speech on television today...
Oh my.

I turned on CNN, sat down on the couch and expected the same poop. Then, I saw this wonderful, articulate, amazing man. His words mirrored the outrage and disgust that I have felt about Iraq and US government corruption.

I turned up the volume and basked in every word. My husband heard the television from the second floor and said, "Man! This guy is kicking major ass!"

I had tears in my eyes. I was riveted and moved--but mostly I was grateful. I'm grateful that someone--ANYONE--spoke the truth about Iraq is such clear, unapologetic, unwavering tones. My elation was tempered a bit for my anger at our Democratic leaders.

Excuse me, but where in the hell are the American Galloways??? Where??? Why do we have to hear the truth, spoken with passion, from a foreigner??? Galloway reminded me of how zoned out and weak our Dems are.

Regardless, I savored Galloway. He was tough as nails and he was spot on. He spoke the truth and he met those bastards head on.

It was absolutely beautiful...

38. American Galloways? Character-assasinated.
There is no room for them in the American media, which is completely dominated by commercial interests (in this case, access to oil).

A big chunk of the UK's broadcasting almost entirely by-passes not only commercialism, but government involvement as well. Each TV viewer pays their license fee directly to the BBC. I believe their news culture would be the same as ours without this public institution.

61. GUYS: NOW is the time. CALL A DEM THIS MORNING!
You've GOT to know that Galloway is the talk of the Hill. Sphincter muscles are uncomfortably tight all over the republi-CON world this morning when they all had to return to their offices and try to figure out what to do about this. NOW IS OUR TIME TO STRIKE. Now that Galloway has smashed the gates open like a battering ram, it's time for OUR guys to get some balls and close the deal.

Here's what I already called in to Dianne Feinstein and Harry Reid:

(in so many words, that is)

Galloway just taught school. Galloway has just shown you how it's done - how to fight these bullies. He spoke the truth and he smashed it straight into their faces. THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE, AND NOW IS WHEN IT SHOULD BE DONE.

Galloway just showed you how. He just gave you the tools.

Now, here's ANOTHER one (to the staffer who takes your call) - please could you take this down - it's VERY simple, it's TEN WORDS.

The Democrats are probably gonna get a lot of heat from critics who say - well they did it, too; they went along; they voted for the war; OKAY. HERE'S WHAT YOU DO - HERE'S WHAT YOU SAY - if you can please pass this on:

(say it slowly so if they actually are taking notes, they can get this - words capitalized for verbal emphasis)

"Because I TRUSTED my president. And he LIED to me."

URGE WHOMEVER YOU SPEAK WITH - to share this. Spread it around. It's vaccine against those who'd say "oh, they're all alike. They all do it. They all caved. They enabled this. They voted for it... blah blah blah. NIP THAT CRAP IN THE BUD.

And do it NOW. Galloway gave us the opening. We need to JUMP on it.

49. Did you catch his interview on Charlie Rose? Ha!
Ol' Charlie has really lost me of late -- he's good with artists, but getting worse all the time with liberal politicians and political activists. Interrupts, argues, etc.

Galloway called him on it: "I was trying to develop a thought, when you interrupted me," and proceeded to finish developing his thought.

I'm really sorry I didn't get to see the whole Senate thing on tv, because my computer just won't play the clips. The bits I saw replayed were choice. Damn, that Scot is good!

Any time Galloway wants a return engagement, I think a lot of us would be more than happy to line up for that show!

50. Galloway's performance "BIG" news here in OZ!
Even our MSM ran it all night here as second biggest story, after our daily update on all our "drug mules" being held in Bali. Independent media ran it first, of course, and were litterly "frothing" at the mouth. Arguably the finest performance by an individual under intense US pressure ever seen. He basically told it like how the "Rest of the World" sees it. The US Senators have been "lampooned" all night over here. Rethuglican Senator Coleman's face will go down in History. Everyone at work was talking about it. Unfortunately for America it has only reinforced people's beliefs about America and Americans, and it ain't pretty!
It's a real shame Galloway didn't go on to attack Cheney, Frist, Hastert, Wolfowitz, Leeden, Bolton, Rice, Powell, Perle, Rove etc etc and finally the AWOL Chimp himself. Should have brought up Gannon/Guckert, Plame, Bliar's sleazy memo etc etc. We would have sat back and ordered takeaway over here.
Democrats, take note!!!! This is how you take on "The Bush Gang"!! Tell the truth!!!

That was exactly what the Senate (Reps & Dems alike) were scared of.

The last thing they need is to trigger another US-originated anthrax
"attack" to remind them to keep quiet.

56. Is it too much to hope for?
Could this be the beginning of the end? The end of Bush, the end of Neo-cons, the end of the corrupt politicians of all parties in the US. Could this be the very beginning of the revolution that has to come? Could this be the spark that ignites a nation, and brings it's people together?

Not if the MSM has anything to do with it.

66. Galloway has strong pro-Palestinian opinions
I believe he even managed to inject a quip about Israeli contributions to Coleman's campaign into yesterday's testimony, which, along with mentions of the special relationship Saudi Arabia enjoys with the US is obviously a major taboo in American political discourse.
