Va. Candidates for Governor in Tight Race
Va. Candidates for Governor in Tight Race

(07-25) 02:27 PDT Richmond, Va. (AP) --

Virginia's race for governor is extremely tight, with Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine and former Attorney General Jerry Kilgore locked in a close contest, according to a new poll.

Kaine, a Democrat, was the choice of 38 percent of 625 likely voters surveyed last week, while Kilgore, a Republican, was the favorite of 37 percent, according to the Mason-Dixon Polling and Research Inc. survey sponsored by a group of newspapers.

Nine percent supported state Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. and 16 percent of the respondents were undecided. The poll was conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Because the poll's margin of error was plus or minus 4 percentage points, Kaine's one-point advantage is statistically insignificant, making one of only two governor's races in the nation this fall too close to predict.
