East Coast cold to Minuteman Project
Albany, N.Y. — The Minuteman Project is bringing its lawn chairs and border-watching volunteers to the U.S. Northeast starting Oct. 1, but its quest to catch illegal immigrants has run into problems.

Co-founder Chris Simcox said simply: “People on the East Coast couldn't care less.”

“It was alarming,” he said. “You go and see roads (on the border) with a sign that says, ‘Stop, don't enter.' To think some criminal will listen is naive at best.”

“It's partly apathy. It's partly that people don't think it's a big deal. So what if somebody crosses the border? I don't know if it's politics or what.”

Reminds me of the saying "If it ain't broke, break it."

1. Soon as Oct storms come rolling in off the great lakes
they will fold up their chairs and leave. Might be they will stop an Native American moving freely back and forth across the American/Canada border. That will not be good either.

2. So, why bother?

I think they should stay home.

3. “They said, ‘No, no, no. Stay out of our business.'”
He cannot quite explain the region's cool reaction.

“It's partly apathy. It's partly that people don't think it's a big deal. So what if somebody crosses the border? I don't know if it's politics or what.”

4. Maybe I'm not the only Nor'Easter to picture "Gladys Kravitz"...
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 08:38 PM by WePurrsevere
or that boy, Randall, from the TV cartoon show "Recess" when I read about these arm chair snoops?

I've lived all of my life in the Nor'East and about 6 years ago moved up close to the Canadian border. From what I've heard and seen many up here seem to think of Canada not as a foreign country but as a rather friendly neighbor. They're also, IME, pretty much a MYOB bunch most of the time.

If it makes these vigilante twits feel any better most up here don't see to be wild about the Border Patrol either lately with their stopping cars miles from the border asking "border crossing" type questions, looking in your car windows as well under your car and even occasionally pulling you over to look in your trunk, etc.

What country are we living in again? :grr:

5. We Already Gots a Minutemen
Maybe they should have thought twice about setting up in Ethan Allen land.

NYers and Vermonters are probably laughing themselves silly over this group.

9. I don't see illegal immigration from Canada being a big problem

I'd be curious to hear the number of people who cross the border illegally from the Canadian side.

Wouldn't that be alot like people from California sneaking into Mexico, no offense?

Now, I'm sure plenty of people sneak over to make drop offs or pick-ups.

Smuggling, sure. Illegal immigration, I doubt it.
