Military reverses plan to add Ed Schultz show to Armed Forces Radio
http://rawstory.com/

<i>The United States' military's Armed Forces Radio has reversed a decision to add The Ed Schultz show to their lineup abroad, RAW STORY has learned.

Schultz was told Sept. 29 he would be added to the military's programming today. That decision was reversed this morning. His producers are currently seeking answers from the military.

On his program Friday, Schultz attacked Alison Barber, an Armed Forces official, over President Bush's staged conversation with U.S. troops in Iraq. Barber is an Assistant Secretary of Defense.</i>

2. If you wont shovel the propaganda without question, you get axed?
This is outrageous.

We need to make a big stink about this.

It should be interesting to see what he says when his show starts.

3. Nominated and quite pissed off too
The next time we get a democratic president I think we should take all the right wing shows off the air.

6. I'm with you on that
I think that we should show no mercy to the lying hacks and shills that have led this country straight into the toilet.

4. Fair and Balanced? Not so much . . .
Frankly I'm fascinated to hear there is serious consideration being given to an alternate non-admin voice like Schultz. I'd like to hope it was in response to requests from our troops. Can anyone help with the backstory on that?

The words "fair" and "balanced" have been turned into punchlines for cynics about the state of journalism these days. Even so, given that limbaugh gets air time on AFR it seems only reasonable to make some attempt at balance, especially since Schulz is certain to actually include news content rather than being limited to the raving and foaming that rush is known for.

7. Schultz needs to make a marketing ploy of it -
"This is the show Rumsfeld doesn't want your troops to hear!."

I don't know why the Pentagon wouldn't want a sports and fishing show on the radio, but hey.

8. whoa, a sports and fishing show? My impression too.
A "liberal" talk show that's not filled with too much liberalism-- that would be unpalatable, I guess.

12. A sports, fishing and a "fastest growing radio show" show. I know.
I guess every now and then he hits on an issue that pisses them off, though. Like the staged, impromtu chat, the president had with the troops last week.

10. I dont think they ever planned to... jerking his chain!
I mean you cant have Iraq war vets like Hackett and Optruth people speaking openly to the soldiers! We all know it.. these people are propaganda masters, and image matters most!

seriouly, would pravda printed even 1 article from a US paper?! no!
so why would bushies let 1 voice of truth in, it could start a mutiny!

too bad the truth is leaking out anyway... they are only delaying the inevitable!

11. One station represents HALF of America's representation.
It MUST be on the air, especially in Armed Forces Radio.

AAR gives voice to many Representatives whose voices ARE NOT heard on other radio programs. These are the voices of very nearly half of all voting Americans being squelched, not just voices of some radio program. UN-AMERICAN!

The person(s) retracting this program from our service personel need to reveal who they are and answer charges of why they are acting in this UNAMERICAN manner. I hope they will be able to adequately explain why this should not be considered unamerican.

Otherwise we have a cancer in American government that must be excised without delay lest it leave our nation sickly and dying.

13. Gosh, we wouldn't want the troops to hear both sides now would we?
From what I hear (since I don't listen to Rush), he only allows people that agree with him on the air, "righties" as Ed would say.

Whether you like Schultz or not, I think it is a good choice for AFR. Schultz allows both democrats AND conservatives. I don't like what conservatives have to say, but it is fun to hear Ed tell them how fucked up their views are.

He is always very jovial and even when he's talking about how the country is going to hell in a handbasket, I don't come away from it feeling depressed. When my husband was in Iraq, the last thing he wanted to hear was the depressing shit going on in Iraq or anywhere.

The troops are getting such a distorted view of everything going on in the country by only listening to Rush. My husband is overseas and has to watch FAUX news and listen to crap like Rush all the time. He gets his news from me. There are a helluva lot more democrats in the army than people seem to realize.

15. Stripes: Talk show host Ed Schultz nixed by AFN
A liberal talk show host scheduled to begin broadcasting on Armed Forces Radio on Monday is blaming political payback for a last-minute decision to shelve the show.

Ed Schultz, whose daily radio show is broadcast in about 100 markets in the United States, said he believes his on-air comments last week criticizing Pentagon officials prompted them to scuttle plans to send the show overseas, despite months of planning.

<cut>

Currently, the Armed Forces Radio lineup includes radio personalities such as Rush Limbaugh, Laura Schlessinger and Paul Harvey, as well as news headlines from CNN and The Associated Press.

On Friday, Schultz’s show focused on the controversy surrounding Barber’s pre-event briefing with troops scheduled to talk with President Bush during a nationally televised event Oct. 13.

Barber was shown on television discussing the process with troops for the teleconference with Bush. Pentagon officials said the participants were simply being prepared for the event and not being told what to say.

Schultz said he thought it was “very telling” that Barber called his producers to say they wouldn’t be put on AFN.

Barber is the head of the Office of Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs and Internal Communications, which includes oversight of the Pentagon Channel and Stars and Stripes as well as American Forces Radio and Television Services.
