CHICAGO — Conrad Black was hit with new U.S. federal criminal charges Thursday, as prosecutors added racketeering and obstruction of justice allegations to the list of fraud counts he's already facing.

<snip>

The racketeering count, under the U.S. Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations law known as RICO, alleges that Black was the principal leader, manager and organizer of the Hollinger enterprise.

It alleges that between 1998 and 2002, Black, together with the defendants, operated Hollinger through a pattern of racketeering acts, each containing one or more underlying allegations of fraud.

<snip>

That same day, Black was also charged with eight counts of fraud. He is now facing four new charges in total -- one each of racketeering, obstruction of justice, money laundering and wire fraud.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Hollinger International Inc.'s (HLR) former chairman and chief executive officer, Conrad Black, was indicted on additional charges Thursday by federal prosecutors, according to media reports. Black has been charged with one count each of racketeering, obstruction of justice, money-laundering and wire fraud, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site. Last week, Black reportedly pleaded not guilty to eight charges of fraud in U.S. District Court in Chicago.

1. Big Jim Thompson (R), one of the few IL govs not in jail warned as well
the SEC notified him that he may be sued for his failure to run the audit committee properly. Thompson is the head of one of the largest law firms and for a decade, managed to avoid indictment, despite some schemes and acts that - well - always came close to crossing the line.

I think this time they have caught him.

8. So who was Black racketeering with?
It takes at least two to racketeer.

Black was Richard Perle's moneyman. I hope they get him too.

17. Lord Tubby of Crossharbour - never thought I'd see the day
Here in Canada, he's been hated and reviled ever since he took over a major supermarket chain (Dominion's, I believe) and raided the company's pension fund.

From his delusions of grandeur (he likes to wear uniforms, though never served anywhere) to his erudite arrogance and trademark sneering comments about anything progressive, he has truly earned the hate of Canadians.

And giving up his Canadian citizenship because the Prime Minister refused to allow him to receive a peerage in the British House of Lords didn't endear him to anyone either (except Maggie Thatcher, who was delighted).

I've been watching his career very closely over the years and looked forward to just this day.

And if nothing else, he has been entertaining. Unless you were a stockholder bilked out of millions or somebody canned in the name of downsizing for fun and profit.

Here's to you, Conrad! May ye rot in Hell for eternity! :toast:

22. Black Pleads Not Guilty to New Charges

CHICAGO, Dec. 16, 2005
-

(AP) Former newspaper tycoon Conrad Black pleaded not guilty Friday to new charges of racketeering, obstruction of justice, money laundering and wire fraud in the alleged plundering of $80 million from Hollinger International Inc.
------------------

Charges against co-defendants Peter Atkinson, Mark Kipnis and the Ravelston Corp. Ltd., the Canadian company that Black used to control Chicago-based Hollinger International, remained unchanged. All have pleaded not guilty.

The former Hollinger executives are accused of cheating on taxes and looting more than $80 million from the company through a series of fraudulent payments linked to the sale of several hundred U.S. and Canadian publishing properties.

The additional charges against Black bring the maximum penalties against him to 95 years in prison and a $7 million fine. Before the new charges, he faced a maximum of 40 years in prison and $2 million if convicted.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Conrad Black, former chairman and chief executive of Hollinger International (HLR), pleaded not guilty to new charges of racketeering, money laundering, wire fraud and obstruction of justice, according to media reports Friday. The case against Black charges that he and some associates looted the Hollinger publishing empire of more than $80 million. Earlier this month, Conrad Black pleaded not guilty to eight charges of fraud. John Boultbee, Black's co-defendant and Hollinger's former chief financial officer, also pleaded not guilty to one new count of wire fraud, according to reports.

Reminds me of an old saying:

The wheels of justice grind very slowly indeed, but they grind very fine.

25. I wonder....
if they get further into the doings of Hollinger if there is any possibility that they will dig deep into the entire corporation. Both Richard Perle and Henry Kissinger are on the board of Hollinger, in part in the ownership of the Jerusalem Times, and you have to wonder what they've been doing. It would certainly be worth investigating, and to snatch two more neocons in their plot to take over the middle east.

I also have to wonder about Lieberman. It appears to me that his devotion to Israel is the main impetus to his support of the Iraq war, and NOT to his service for the American people. I fear his loyalties are there more, and that if it ever came down to a decision on his part to be true to either the USA or Israel, he would certainly choose Israel.

Perhaps that's unfair of me, but that's been my impression for a very long time. We bitch and moan about the RRR and their placing religion over common sense, patriotism and tolerance, but those of other faiths also have this same sort of jingoistic fervor, and Lieberman is one of those who appears to be of that nature.

I have hopes they will faces charges as well but reality dictates it is unlikely, sadly.
