Memphis Paper Finds Dead Voters, Prompts Fraud Probe
By Joe Strupp
Published: December 15, 2005 3:45 PM ET

NEW YORK Results of a state senate election in western Tennessee have been thrown into doubt, and an investigation into voter fraud launched, after the Commercial Appeal of Memphis uncovered proof that votes had been cast for dead people.

The Sept. 15 special election to fill a vacant seat in the 29th state Senate District, which includes part of Memphis, had already drawn intense interest when the margin of victory was just 13 votes out of 8,750 cast. Democrat Ophelia Ford had edged Republican Terry Roland in the race to fill the seat previously held by Ford's brother, John, who was forced to resign in May after being indicted on bribery charges....

1. Are these Fords related to Congressman Harold Ford
who's running for the Tennesee Senate seat next year?

5. Not so much a Democratic scandal, but a Ford scandal
The Commercial Appeal has been publishing dirt on the Ford family for ages, though that's not difficult to do. Harold, Jr. is clean, but the same cannot be said, unfortunately, for other members of his family.

Most folks in Memphis don't blame Harold, Jr., for his family, on the assumption that you can't pick your relatives. However, when the Senate race starts up, this dead-body problem is going to be just one more rock to throw at Jr. over in East Tennessee. Folks there have looong memories and don't forget Harold, Sr.'s involvement with the Butcher banking empire (a scandal from 20 years ago).

7. Harold, Jr. cannot win because of his sleazy family.

3. There is no way to determine which way the
votes were cast though.
