Spitzer Subpoenas Music Cos. on Pricing
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=528&ncid=528&e=2&u=/ap/20051227/ap_on_bi_ge/music_probe

ALBANY, N.Y. - State investigators have subpoenaed several major music companies as part of a preliminary inquiry into whether the digital music services have engaged in any illegal price-fixing activity.

Darren Dopp, a spokesman for state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, said the office was seeking information on wholesale prices the music labels charge for digital music files that can be downloaded. Dopp said Tuesday that it would take months for the office to launch a full investigation, if one is warranted.

Warner Music Group Corp. said in a regulatory filing Friday that the subpoena it received is part of "an industrywide investigation."

1. This is great news. $.99 is not about supply/demand. It's based on
how much the music companies charge online sellers per download. At $.50 a track, I would consider downloads to be fair. But for a buck a track, I'm going to find the CD on sale and make them produce and distribute that CD for me. Screw them.

4. I just buy the CD I want anyway...
...I cringe at the thought of paying money for a compromised format. Not a fan of lossy compression...give me linear PCM or pure analog. I do like AAC encoding for office music, I have tons of my CD's ripped to iTunes on my office box for desktop music, but I rip at 320Kbps. Doesn't do nearly the damage to the treble as mp3 encoding does...no swirlies.

6. Yeah, CDs are the way to go. I usually encode mp3's at about 192K
It would be nice to do 320 on everything, but I'd be out of space on my player over a year ago. I hear OGG is really good, but haven't tried it out yet.
