Poll: Most think Bush is failing second term

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A majority of Americans are more likely to vote for a candidate in November's congressional elections who opposes President Bush, and 58 percent consider his second term a failure so far, according to a poll released Thursday.

Fewer people consider Bush to be honest and trustworthy now than did a year ago, and 53 percent said they believe his administration deliberately misled the public about Iraq's purported weapons program before the U.S. invasion in 2003, the CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll found.

Pollsters interviewed 1,006 American adults Friday through Sunday. Most questions in the survey had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. (Poll)

Bush is preparing for his State of the Union address, set for next week, and told reporters Thursday that he is "looking forward" to campaigning for Republicans in November's elections. (Full story)

29. Gallup needs to expand it's dialers to more than the GOP National offices
and church directories.

Actually, the way the questions are asked has everything to do with the results. What I can the "Jay Walking" effect skews the results - people at some level are calculating "What answer is going to get me on TV?" or "Is there a prize for giving the answer they are looking for?"

19. Hate to spoil the fun, but....
I made a signature from this great paragraph from a great rant - expresses my views more eloquently than I could:

"You really have to wonder what kind of bloated house-bound moron could think slumping polls and plummeting approval ratings would worry a gang of fanatics who stole two elections in a row, invaded a country they knew couldn’t defend itself, and gave a male hustler White House security clearance."

26. what i see in people i know

is that they see what is going on and complain mildly or suffer in silence or ignorance, then fall right into the GOP's clutches at the next election. well, sometimes they don't 'fall'... they go willingly.

31. In order of decreasing support
Here's a listing, from the poll, of how * support drops with the topic:

strong and decisive 51%
honest 49
entire presidency success 46
overall approval 43
uniter 41
will vote for * backer 40
2nd term is a success 38
satisfied 35
clear plan 34
US improved 28

According to the poll, there are still about 1/3 of people who will never abandon their vote for *. It's particularly scary when you look at the uniter result. How can anyone who pays any attention to what's happening consider * a uniter! Really shows the bias and lack of judgement in that segment of the population. While I might go along somewhat with the fact that * is strong and decisive (and wrong much of the time), raising that results on that topic, honest answers to 'uniter' should be near zero, even if you otherwise support him. He's the personification of a divider politician, only concerned with his roughly 50% of the population.

Rove understands all this and all he needs to do is add 10-15% of voters to the pool, and he does this with flipity flopity voting record tactics, fear and the waronterra, swiftboating and other mind games. Unfortunately, it works.

Dems need to accept this pathetic situation and take away some of Rove's ammunition. Don't nominate Senators for President (voting record makes it harder to win), adapt a mantra that we should not be afraid ("The only thing we have to fear is fear itself") and then turn the tables by talking of the culture of corruption, incompetence (Katrina, Iraq etc.) and the huge deficits and loss of life, and tens of thousands of productive lives, brought on by an unnecessary war. We're about to see a Vietnam-like pullout and declaration of victory, to try to spin this disaster into a perception of victory by the November elections. And, Rove will try to get away with spinning this but, with so many races, it's a lot harder to control and my hope is for Democratic control of the House or Senate, then the inevitable impeachment proceedings.
