School halts prayer recital on public address system

Newspaper questioned district's practice

Friday, February 03, 2006
Associated Press

Mineral Ridge, Ohio- A public high school has stopped opening the school day with a prayer, after a newspaper questioned school officials about whether the practice was appropriate.

Until this week, the Lord's Prayer was recited over the public address system at Mineral Ridge High School before the Pledge of Allegiance and morning announcements.

The Warren Tribune Chronicle had questioned Weathersfield Local School District officials about whether the prayer violates the First Amendment's separation of church and state. The newspaper reported the school district's decision but has not expressed an editorial opinion.

No student at the school, which enrolls about 300 students in Northeast Ohio, was required to say the prayer and none had complained, Superintendent Mike Hanshaw said...

1. When are people going to realize that
even if no one complains it does not mean that no one objected. Some people would be rightfully afraid of reprisal if they complained. And then, just because no one complained it did not make it right.

:wtf: is wrong with peopleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! :nuke:

2. Replace the word "Allah" for "God" and say the same prayer.
Then see if there are complaints.

3. I see...
No one complained.
So...if the school district had held Klan Rallies, recited anthems that said Jews are Satans Children, Page 6 of the Satanic Bible, etc. these would all be okay as long as nobody complained.

11. Honestly, most days I haven't a clue. Once I thought last yr's Innaugural
gala/nightmare had passed, along comes this year's SOTU and all it's decorum...where EVEN the most liberal Dem women (like Pelosi, Maxine Waters)...showed up wearing BRIGHT "red" dresses...clearly to prove solidarity with the "Red" Prez. and Repug Right. Such blatant solidarity with the opposition making me puke.

Can't play both sides. Either they're for Chimpy...OR for We-the-People...and the "writing's" clearly on the dresses. And NOT for the Dem Party.

7. They stopped PRAYER? OMG! Now the school will descend into chaos.
When they took the prayers out of schools in Texas, students became much more disobedient, began smoking cigarettes and engaging in casual sex. They cheated on tests, too.

Someone please put the invisible super being back into charge in our schools!

12. "Miserable Ridge" is right down the street from me.
OhBoy...I bet CNN is coming to town now.
After all, this is the kind of "news" they love to cover live.
If we're lucky Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity will do live remotes next week.

I gotta go make some signs.

13. I went to a Public high school in Ohio and never heard the words
"God" or "prayer" spoken outside of a history or literature class-but that was in the 1980s. Apparently Ohio is somewhere in the 1880's today. :-(

14. Wasn't the whole "moment of silence" supposed to be the solution to this
or was that just a state thing (I went to school in Virginia)?

If it was a nationwide thing did people do a survey and find out that during the MOS Tommy was:

A: Fantasizing about the girl or guy next to him

B: Scratching or otherwise improperly touching himself

C: Both A & B

D: If he was praying, it was that he'd pass a test where his idea of studying was putting the text under his pillow the night before and hoping the knowledge would seep through

E: None of the above

------------------------------
Why is it that the concept of someone praying before they leave the house totally escapes the thought process with these people?
