Gallup: More Than Half of Americans Feel Bush Deliberately Misled Country on Iraq WMD

A new Gallup Poll, conducted in late January, reveals that just 39% of Americans approve of the way President Bush is handling Iraq, with 58% disapproving.

Over half (53%) now say the administration "deliberately misled the American public about whether Iraq has weapons of mass destruction," with 46% disagreeing. Gallup notes that this finding is "essentially reversed" from one year ago.

Further, some 51% say the U.S. "made a mistake in sending troops to Iraq." Yet, despite this, only 17% expect a significant reduction of U.S. troops in Iraq in the next year.

The partisan divide on all these questions is enormous, but with Independents now aligning much more with Democrats. For example, 84% of Republicans feel the president did not mislead the country on WMD, the exact percentage of Democrats who feel the opposite.

1. Isn't Gallup the pollster that leans right?
I always pay more attention to Zogby, but I thought I heard that about Gallup somewhere.

If they do, that 53% is way too low!

4. Yes, Gallup overpolls Repugs
It started in the 1950s when Repugs were in the majority in the country.

In the 1960s the country started leaning left, but Gallup didn't change the poll demographics to reflect this.

If you look at the polls over a period of time, Gallup is always skewed to the Repugs.

Gallup is nothing but a propaganda outfit and its "polls" are designed to influence public opinon- not reflect it. In reality, you can probably add 20% to the total here with a honestly scientific methodology.

Unfortuately, even a lot of DU'rs find themselves jumping to the tune of whatever Gallup and others put out- even though any graduate student in the sciences or social sciences can tell them that both the dataset and the results are skewed.

Powerful thing, propaganda.

27. Yes, 53% from Gallup should translate into 65% from a Zogby Poll
This IS good news!

allowed to vote, have children, and operate motor vehicles on the nation's highways.

7. I was just thinking
about us on here a year ago tearing our hair out that people weren't getting it. It's a great relief to me to know that the majority of Americans are not really total "morans" but maybe just slower to catch on. Or they've been really, really busy.
Still, far too many idolize him. It's really creepy.

16. Four years ago, we on this board called ourselves the 10 percenters. . .
a reference to the overwhelming odds arrayed in favor of ShrubCo and his mad designs. I was unbelievably pleased with the numbers who opposed Bush last year at this time. Disappointed he took the election, yes, but pleased with the direction in which the nation was starting to turn. It is not the "snapshot in time" that matters, but the direction of the flow, and Shrub's been paddling against the current since well before the 2004 election. By fall, I expect the deluge of disapproval will sweep the Republicans from power and life will become -- how shall we phrase it? -- ah, mucky -- yes, life will become mucky for George W. as he gets moved by the swells and eddies of the current into the mud and muck of the miasma he's created for himself.

9. The most chilling, horrifying number in that poll is "17%":
"Further, some 51% say the U.S. "made a mistake in sending troops to Iraq." Yet, despite this, only 17% expect a significant reduction of U.S. troops in Iraq in the next year.

Convincing the population that nothing can or will be done about the treasonous crimes of their overlords - scares the shit out of me.

14. Why does that number horrify you? . . .
I have no expectation there will be "a significant reduction of US troops in Iraq in the next year," and I've both opposed the IraqAttack and believed George W. is an idiot from the get-go. In fact, I'll be amazed if anything appreciably changes in Iraq or here in the States before the next Congress is seated in 2007. I expect that Congress to be controlled by the Democrats, however, so I have hopes there may be substantial changes next year. But for now, I believe BushCo and the Republican Congress are too arrogant, too pigheaded, and ultimately too stupid to make even those changes that will benefit themselves (i.e., mitigate their crimes), let alone serve the interests of the nation.

21. It means they have convinced us there's no antiwar movement
Which is not true. And it has nothing to do with Repub or Dem political control.

There's an antiwar movement in the living rooms of millions of Americans each day, when they sit in front of the tv news and say "why the hell are we spending money in Iraq when we need to spend it here? And why are troops dying for a war based on lies?"

But there is no 1-800-antiwar-movement number that flashes on the screen so that these millions of people can learn that others like them are asking the same questions.

23. If you're waiting for a toll-free antiwar number. . .
you're in for a lifetime of disappointment. And just because people don't believe something is going to happen doesn't mean they don't want it to happen. It's why I included my example: I support and participate in antiwar causes and events, and have for many years, but I don't expect any substantial changes to happen with US forces in Iraq in the next 12 months or more. Do I have doubts that the anti-war movement exists? No. But I don't expect an upwelling of anti-war activity, either, even in light of the changing opinion polls.

There will be pressure exerted to change the situation in Iraq, mostly directed at our Congresscritters and through the business community, but absent some unforseeable catalytic spark, I don't believe there will be an appreciable change in the anti-war movement over the next 12 months.

So unlike the situation around the Vietnam fiasco, I believe the anti-war effort will be more akin to that seen during the Korean conflict (which was a far more unpopular war than Vietnam) -- low-key but inexorable pressure. I hope I'm wrong. But if asked in a poll such as we're discussing here, I would honestly answer that I don't expect any major change in the next year. It's the reality of the politics, at least so far as I see them.

if the democrats DON'T retake the house AND impeach the murderous lying bastard- we are OUT. not just out of the party, but out of the country.
we've lived thru TOO MANY cases of HEINOUSLY CORRUPT repugs being allowed to skate- "for the good of the country"- nixon, ray-gun, and both bushes- watergate, iran-contra, 9-11, and both iraq wars...

we're both sick of what this country has become, and unless it changes real quick- we'll enjoy the rest of our lives in a better place.

36. Comments I sent to friends with this story:
Despite the complicity of all three branches of our government, 95% of talk radio and TV news, and half the leading newspapers in the country that fail to make the lies about the war front page news or even touch the real reasons we invaded, Americans are waking up to the truth.

Some scholars are now coming forward to ask that universities explore what our government failed to: the inexplicable things that happened on 9/11 like four planes flying unmolested for nearly two hours when we have fighters that can go from the ground to 40,000 feet in a minute, and fly at 1300 mph, or why three steel buildings collapsed from fire, two of which were designed to withstand airplane strikes, the third wasn't even hit by a plane, and no steel buildings in history have ever collapsed from fire.

And the Democrats think they are going to win by being the "me too" party on the war or suggesting we send more troops. It is obvious that it isn't the American people they are afraid of offending, (ESPECIALLY THE 84% of DEMOCRATS who know Bush lied) but those who decide who lives and who dies and profit from war, so their children can live like Paris Hilton for the next six generations instead of five.
