Personal data on hundreds of Americans faxed to Manitoba company

Lockport, Manitoba — Confidential information on hundreds of United States citizens, including social security numbers, health information and bank account numbers, is being sent mistakenly by fax to a small Manitoba company.

A 60-centimetre-high stack of data, which also includes people's addresses and salaries, already sits in the offices of North Regent Rx, a herbal remedy distribution company that operates out of a house in Lockport, 15 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

"I know how much these people make, I know what their social security number is, I know where they live," North Regent Rx spokesman Jody Baxmeyer told The Canadian Press.

"Almost everything a person needs for identity theft is actually faxed to us on a daily basis."

3. I can relate

I get faxes all the time at work for a real estate company (I am guessing). Documents relating to house purchases, mortgages, etc. I think their fax # is similar to ours. Some of them have lots of personal info on them.

I guess that's what shredders are for. Scary, though.
