Bush aims to tame deficits with domestic cuts
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060206/pl_nm/bush_budget_dc_15

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush on Monday proposed a $2.77 trillion budget that cuts programs from Medicare to education, prompting Democratic criticism that the elderly and working Americans were bearing the brunt of his fiscal mismanagement.

Facing election-year pressure from conservative Republicans to get tougher on spending, Bush asked the U.S. Congress in his fiscal 2007 budget to cut discretionary programs outside national security by 0.5 percent.

Bush proposed a record $439.3 billion defense budget aimed at fighting unconventional terrorism and major conflicts with other nations if necessary. On top of that, the White House will seek new financing for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The president renewed his call for Republican-led Congress to make his tax cuts permanent even as his blueprint projected a surge in the federal deficit to $423 billion this year, up more than $100 billion from fiscal 2005.

Bush said in his budget message that failing to extend his tax cuts would amount to a tax increase.

<snip>

Sen. Kent Conrad (news, bio, voting record), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Budget Committee, said the budget was misleading because it did not fully account for costs of Iraq war or for other anticipated expenses such as shielding middle-class Americans from the costs of the alternative minimum tax.

5. The process of externalization..
Conservatives and many Republicans want to externalize the pain of shrinking Government. The same way Corporation externalize costs. Think Walmart's externalization of health care costs to local communities.

Let someone else bare the cost and the suffering of their actions and the effects of their pursuit of their ideals. For Conservatives and the like, it's all so they can have more tax cuts and "less Government".

The thing they can not grasp is that the reason the US economy is so strong is that so many people participate in it. You remove the essential Government programs that keep many of the fringe citizens in the game and their entire financial support structure collapses and they are no longer participants. This is turn will wreak the economy. Clinton proved this by reversing many Regan and Bush Sr era initiatives and re balancing the tax base. What would we give for some of that Clinton economy now?

6. Good post
You've really kind of captured what they're doing & why it's so harmful - it is the externalization of government. Why can't you be President?

9. He is a heartless, greedy, corrupt bastard
who thinks nothing of causing suffering to those who are already struggling, in order to further enrich his wealthy cronies. He is not a fiscal conservative, he is a bloodthirsty plunderer who is doing his best to ruin our country. The man is a sociopath, and I think he delights at the thought of how many people his tax cuts will hurt. He's only happy when he's waging war, with other people doing the fighting and dying, and waging a different kind of war on his own countrymen by his insane, lopsided budget.

11. New budget plan squeezes education, Medicare
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11100952/

<snip>
WASHINGTON - President Bush sent Congress a $2.77 trillion budget plan Monday that would make his first-term tax cuts permanent while reducing government-funded programs to deal with exploding budget deficits. Almost a third of the 141 targeted programs are in education. <snip>

<snip> The budget blueprint sharply decreases funding for supporting the arts, vocational education, parent resource centers and drug-free schools, and instead puts a heavy emphasis on keeping the country strong militarily. <snip>

What was he saying in his speech about helping our children???
