Dutch Islamists post cartoons depicting Anne Frank, Hitler in bed
A Belgian-Dutch Islamic political organization posted anti-Jewish cartoons on its Web site in response to the cartoons of the prophet Mohammed that appeared in Danish papers last year and offended many Muslims.

The cartoons were posted on the Arab European League's site on Saturday. It was not working Sunday morning because of exceeded bandwidth.

Dyab Abou Jahjah, the party's founder and best-known figure, defended the action on the Dutch television program Nova Saturday.

"Europe has its sacred cows, even if they're not religious sacred cows," he told the program.

16. It's not Religion, It's the people using Religious Rhetoric to mask their
hatred.

ALL religions are about joining together in Unity.

Any rabble rouser who preaches divisiveness is the antithesis of what Religion is about.

And hopefully I can be spare the "no good Scotsman" crapola.

34. Yeah it is...
If people using Religious Rhetoric to mask their hatred, then which religious people are using their religious rhetoric to mask their Unity?

Little confused as to why you insist on ignoring the INEVITABLE problem of religious 'hatred', while hoping some religious notion of 'love' or 'unity' will save the day.

This is like the 'catholic' rap my buddy gives me. "oh, there are people trying to change the Church and I should support them?"

How? Have another Reformation? Amazingly arrogant of someone to THINK that in 2000 years, and the many many people who have tried to change the Church which included high bishops, kings, theologians, generals, foreign invaders, entire countries, etc etc, -- they all failed, but folks like him, are working hard to change it and give it money and feel the need to defend it, when bishops demand political leaders follow Church doctrine...

It would be nice IF religious people spent less time with 'their relationship with God' and a little more time on looking at their religions as institutions and political movements.

When people start to do that, then, YES, indeed, the "no good Scotsman" argument will be defeated.

BUT if you still insist on looking at it ONLY as theology, then there are people claiming to be a BETTER scotman than YOU.

doesn't mean it's not appropriate to describe the dewey-eyed fantasy you're espousing.

What if I make up a bunch of shit about hating people with outie-style belly buttons and call it a religion? (Religions have been founded on less plausible grounds than that!) Is it automatically about joining together in capital-U Unity just because I decide to call it a religion?

12. Right...
Remind me to burn something down.

Two points from my perspective:

1) People who get this worked up over religion are mentally ill.

2) Even if you accept that people's bizarre fetishes with invisible sky fairies should be humored, you don't get to inflict your religious taboos on other people.

Imagine Catholics burning down condom factories, and threatening to attack anyone who uses contraceptives, even though they are not Catholic.

Imagine Jews issuing fatwas calling for the assassination of Jimmy Dean and the burning of Bo Jangles for selling sausage biscuits.

Your "religious freedom" STOPS where it interferes with my rights and safety.

Quoting the Bible as some sort of crystal ball is kinda silly, ain't it? Especially since everything was so friggin' backward when it was written. Should we also ask the Bible how to prevent the Blue Screen of Death on our PCs? It's like taking ettiquette lessons from the Beverly Hillbillies. 27. All religions that posit a "god"
are fundamentally nihilistic. The exception would be the religion that did not devolve into destructive behavior. "Religion" on a societal level is never about "religion", it's always about power and control and money. All Islamists believe that everyone else is wrong. All Christianists believe everyone else is wrong. All Jews believe everyone else is wrong. Each of these groups will have individuals who will "say" that don't think that way, but they are not to be believed. This type of silly back and forth between religionists is to be expected; it escalating into violence is almost a foregone conclusion...

44. Any "Christian" who says that the acceptance and
acknowledgment of Jesus' sacrifice is NOT necessary for salvation is not a "Christian" as far as I can see. If you say that Jesus is not "the way" to salvation, but only "a way" (take it or leave it - it isn't necessary), then you are a new kind of Christian and I am not familiar with your religion.

30. Keep in mind ...
... this all started cuz ...

1) The Danish newspaper sent out a challenge to cartoonists to do a Mohammed cartoon ... as an experiment (to see whether they'd censor themselves).

2) Few of those cartoons were ever published.

3) The Saudis were in trouble because they didn't protect the pilgrims who died in the Hajj last month. So, they passed around both printed and UNPRINTED cartoons in the Middle East to stir things up and get the heat off themselves (just like the Bushies do every time push comes to shove).

This is totally manufactured chaos.

The whole world has gone absoultely nuts. Along with the "leader of the free world," so no one should be surprised.

49. Of course they got it wrong
Because Nazi's were extremely forbidden to sleep with Jews. No blood mixing-and yes it's outrageous-what to think of Anne Frank as a whore-is that the idea-but we know there isn't a shred of truth to that or even to the idea that Jews prostituted themselves to get along with Nazi's. No-they were just murdererd wholesale.

I was watching a Kathy Griffin taped comedy concert last night. Man-is she offensive to everyone. But the thing about comedy is that it is an exaggeration of a truth that can't be said any other way.

The truth of the cartoon is that yes, the Muslim religion and Mohammad are being used to fuel a ticking bomb-that yes-kills people. There is probably right now in Iraq someone with a bomb strapped to him using the excuse of his religion to kill people (as some would on DU-justified if it's an American solider-I don't say that-but more irony-the bombers kill more of their own people than they ever do Americans)
It just is an uncomfortable truth. So Mohammed with a turban shaped like a ticking bomb-yeah that's an exaggeration of a real truth. Ann Frank sleeping with Hitler is just absurd. Not the same at all. Of course, all Muslims aren't using their relgion to kill-very few are-but it's the essence of the clash of cultures.

The other cartoon I saw was God in heaven saying to the suicide bombers-already enough-we are running out of virgens. That's almost darn funny if it weren't so sad. That's offensive because it shows Allah or Mohammad or because it's a truth they don't want to face? I don't know-I know many are killing because they are young, hopeless, radicalized and USED- told to believe in the virgens as one reward for killing. But the cartoon is offensive? No the idea tha they let anyone believe that killing someone gets a reward in heaven is what's offensive.

Many here and most in the Muslim world thing the cartoons were there to make the Muslims feel bad, to outrage them. Of course, introspection is totally lost because they only have on reaction: my relgion is holy, my prophet is holy and I see no evil being committed in the name of my religion. It doesn't even exist apparently.

A freaking cartoon war, indeed! The Crusaders have finally jumped the shark, and it is a world guided by pre-pubescents.

you are adding nothing to the debate.

In fact, you are detracting from it.

69. Wrong, we in the West don't burn embassies, we start wars
This whole cartoon thing is being used to incite violence among Muslims as just another pretext for war, to feed The War Machine.

Think about who REALLY is violent these days, on a macro level.

Well, there's Sudan. And then, there's the US.

74. actually, it's making a huge point about Islam and other religions
doesn't it say something that the response to this is not nearly as bad as it was when it was Muslims being offended. even when you only look at the extremists.

i guess they believe Allah approves of this cartoon of Hitler in bed with Frank ?

Not really. If the discussion is provocation and the reaction to it. I think the comments are pertinent.

79. There won't be any response
other than lots of people looking at it and thinking that the guys who did this are really fucked up.

But that's okay. If screwed up people want to show the world just how lame they are, I guess that's okay.

No, I don't expect to see the newspaper building burned down in response.
