King funeral attracts anti-gay protest (Westboro Baptist)
http://www.sovo.com/thelatest/thelatest.cfm?blog_id=5067

Camped out on the grass next to the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church’s stone-carved sign, the protesters, who made a name for themselves protesting at the funeral of slain gay college student Matthew Shepherd and most recently at the funerals of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, held signs that read Mrs. King was in hell because she was a “fag enabler” who advocated for gay rights.

“Children, ask your parents what sodomy is,” shouted one picketer at startled toddlers and small children who walked past hand-in-hand with their elders.

Many of the mourners walking by, mostly African American, audibly voiced their disgust. One woman held her two forefingers up in the shape of a cross as an impromptu talisman to ward of the vile language Westboro’s supporters were spewing.

“Shame on you! Where is your righteous indignation of the filthy life of Coretta Scott King, a fag enabler!” shouted one Westboro member who accused Mrs. King of “hijacking the freedom train” and warned those who supported her were also doomed to hell.

“I can’t believe this,” said one mourner as she hurriedly walked past.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of Westboro’s pastor and founder Fred Phelps, was on hand at the funeral protest and acknowledged she had received death threats from blacks disgusted with her protest at Mrs. King’s funeral.

15. Do only gay men indulge in sodomy?
What a laugh. Maybe they should give it a go within their biblical marriage and broaden their horizens.

2. I'm not one to incite violence, but...
I hope Phelps and his clan get the shit kicked out of them at one of their "protests".

Then they sue the assaulter, the cops, the city, the state, etc.
Lots of $$$ for Freddie and his brood.

You can't sue if you're in a coma, and if there are no witnesses!!!!!

3. Disgusting and sad.
I really can't think of any other words to describe these Westboro people. They seem to revel in this abominable behavior.

The only consolation is that, in the end, all of their hatred will get them absolutely nothing. They'll find themselves bitter and alone long after the rest of society has moved on. If the God they claim to serve does exist, then I also suspect they'll be in for quite the surprise when they arrive at the pearly gates.

5. If I ever *see* Fred Phelps . . . I think I'll kiss him! Indeed.

If I ever *see* Fred Phelps . . . I think I'll kiss him!

Indeed.

Setting aside his reaction of course . . . LOL . . . but, damn, every liberal and progressive should love this guy. After all, he says it like it is in the hearts and minds of the religious off-the-wall rightwingnut zealots. He uses so-called religion to dodge federal and state tax laws and to dodge our constitution, push his personal agenda, make money, keep a home and "religious" compound, and uses corporate non-profit loop-holes in both state and federal laws. Whadda guy!

Phelps does prove a great case for being and remaining liberal and progressive in America!

8. So instead of being outraged about these pigs at the funeral of Mrs. King
CNN, MSNBC, ABC and other corporate media decide to be outraged about Carter and Clinton. What a bunch of hypocritical wimps.

16. I disagree
Phelps and his ilk did not get any tv coverage. They want coverage to expand their hate. Silencing them is the best weapon.

Edited on Thu Feb-09-06 11:33 AM by DinahMoeHum
for the likes of Phelps. (It works best if you're male):

Have a sign when he comes around that says: "Hey Fred! It was FABULOUS last night! Let's do it again soon! Call me at (phone number of the local newspaper or police station or fundie church)"

20. When they protested at the UCC
General Synod in KC, people kept track of how long they were out front protesting. Delegates and visitors could pledge money to the LGBT Coalition or AIDS charities or other groups, by the hour as they protested. So, The longer they spewed their hate, the more money went to charities that help those they hate. I thought it a pretty good idea. And gave generously.
