Laura Bush Approval Ratings Among Best for First Ladies
Most would not support a Senate bid for her

PRINCETON, NJ -- While her husband George W. Bush struggles to improve his low job approval ratings, Laura Bush remains a very popular first lady. Her current job approval ratings are among the most positive ratings Gallup has recorded for a first lady. But her high level of popularity may not translate into political support should she seek public office. Most Americans say they would not like to see her run for the U.S. Senate.

A Jan. 20-22 CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll finds 82% of Americans approving and just 13% disapproving of the job Laura Bush is doing as first lady. Last year, she had a similar 85% rating, and she had a solid 74% rating in July 2003 when she was first rated.

Gallup has asked the public to evaluate most of the first ladies at least one time during their tenures in the White House. In general, Americans give positive marks to first ladies, but Laura Bush's scores are among the best Gallup has measured.

For example, Hillary Rodham Clinton averaged a 64% approval rating while she was first lady, ranging from a low of 54% in January 1995, to a high of 80% in February 1999.

Other first ladies' approval ratings tended to be in the 50% range; these lower ratings were due in part to the fact that many Americans did not have opinions of first ladies when asked to rate them. Nancy Reagan had a 53% approval rating in May 1988, with 31% disapproving and 16% having no opinion. In April 1987, and December 1981, her approval ratings were 58% and 57%, respectively. Rosalynn Carter had a 59% approval rating the one time she was rated in August 1979. Pat Nixon had a 54% approval rating in a June 1969, poll. Gallup also asked about Eleanor Roosevelt twice during Franklin Roosevelt's administration. She received a 67% approval rating in 1938, and a 68% rating in 1940.

They're in most libraries.

The numbers go back to the 1930s.

Eleanor's fell below FDR's with the advent of WWII.

49. Oh yeah, they're out there.
Some of the surveys about Eleanor Roosevelt are about specific things she did, such as the wartime trips to Europe and the Pacific - which a lot of people thought was a waste, actually.

Most the Gallup surveys are available in libraries in bound form. They go back into the 30s, the Harris surveys don't go back quite that far.

58. since 1981
The administration claimed that the general public was not nearly as concerned about these issues as was the media elite, but polling data by the media suggested that this was not the case. A Newsweek poll reported on December 21, 1981 showed...fully 62 percent of the public thought that Nancy Reagan put "too much emphasis on style and elegance," given current economic conditions and her husband's attention to Federal budget cutting. In addition, 61 percent of the respondents felt that Nancy Reagan was less sympathetic than other First Ladies to the problems of the poor and disadvantaged.

18. You couldn't look anymore evil than Laura in that pic.
She sure looks pissed off listening to the TRUTH about her moron of a husband. What gets me is,why were those two even THERE?They didn't belong there, they represent everything Coretta was NOT. Here this little mental midget is trying his best to undo all the civil rights that Martin and Coretta fought for all their lives and they have the NERVE to show up at her funeral?

They got what they deserved. It's great that the truth was finally told in front of them and they didn't have the power to have the truth speakers thrown out! They had to sit and listen to the truth for a change and not a bunch of lies being spewed out so Jesus Bu$h could feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I hope they both never felt so uncomfortable in all their worthless lives. I can't believe those gallup polls either. No one gives a shit about Laura and her joker mouth permanent grin. She does NOTHING for our country except being an enabler to bu$h and his trashing of the constitution......and I don't think that deserves a high "approval" rating.

Isn't this the first time the Joker and the King ever had to sit through an event that wasn't hand picked and all bu$h worshipers? I think it was. I'll bet they were sorry as hell they went to that funeral...especially them having to sit through the standing ovation and 5 minutes of clapping for a REAL President.....President Clinton. Hahahahahaha.....I LOVED it. It had to have really pissed off the little bu$h kid for him NOT getting all the attention. Bastard.

Her words and deeds mean nothing.

about someone that really isn't all that important.

Why is this country so concerned about politicians' spouses? It's a bizarre infatuation. Why is the media always so worried about how they dress and how they look? Unfortunately, I see that here as well. There'll be some thread going on about Pickle's ugly dress. Who cares?

But it's even worse on the right. We saw what happened with Alito's wife, who made a big fuss at a freakin SC justice hearing. What a joke. Or worse yet, the way they went on about Teresa Heinz Kerry. Sometimes the country can act pretty backwards. I suppose more people would just like first ladies and politicians' wives to be stepford wives.

These results are based on telephone interviews with randomly selected national samples of approximately 500 adults, aged 18 and older, conducted Jan. 20-22. For results based on this sample, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum error attributable to sampling and other random effects is ±5 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

Polling a First Lady who has almost never expressed an opinion on anything, has that snake-hiss smile glued on her face (EXCEPT at the C. King funeral!!).

Point IS, you can't LIKE what you don't know...unless you lack the smarts to know that you don't.

Or translated: Pickles "is NO Eleanor Roosevelt, OR Rosyln Carter." Or anywhere near. Pickles is a prop, and smart enough to know it. Thus that perpetual hissing smile.

67. Can you even IMAGINE the press saying anything negative about her?
It would be like the press being nasty toward McCain these days. It doesn't compute.

68. Not bad for a murderer....remember auto accident when she
killed someone while running a stop sign in Texas. Happened when she was in high school after coming back from a home coming rally. She didn't serve a day in jail. So much for the part of accountability. It was covered up in the media. Impact was so hard that it threw the guy out of his car & broke his neck. Believe it or not, the name of the guy was Michael Douglas.

Wonder if it would have made the press if Hillary had killed someone??
