NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Former Gov. John G. Rowland will receive a limited taste of freedom as soon as Friday after spending more than 10 months at a federal prison camp _ time his friends say Rowland put to good use.

The three-term Republican, scheduled to be released by Sunday from the Loretto Federal Correctional Institution in western Pennsylvania, will be fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet and placed under house arrest for four months.

He also will have to perform 300 hours of community service.

Friends interviewed by The Associated Press said the 48-year-old former governor and congressman has no immediate plans other than to reunite with his wife and children. Rowland has three children from a previous marriage and his wife Patricia has two children from a previous marriage. They rent a house in West Hartford.

Former Conn. Governor Released From Prison
Feb. 10, 2006

(AP) Former Gov. John G. Rowland left a federal prison camp Friday after serving more than 10 months for a corruption charge that forced him from office in 2004.

Rowland, 48, was released from Loretto Federal Correctional Institution in western Pennsylvania at about 5:20 a.m., said Ruth Bracken, a prison spokeswoman.

He will be fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet and placed under house arrest for four months. He also must perform 300 hours of community service.

The three-term Republican governor pleaded guilty in December 2004 to one count of conspiracy to steal honest services, a combination of mail and tax fraud. He admitted accepting more than $100,000 in vacations and chartered trips to Las Vegas from a state contractor and a charter jet company that received a state tax break.

5. He'll be in Bush's cabinet soon
Rowland was a very good friend of Bush's. He was being groomed for a cabinet post when the vetting turned up the all the scandals and the FBI investigations. They had to throw him to the wolves, but he was on stage at the Governor's Conference with little Jebbie even after his crimes had been made public. They'll back him up. Rowland will do just fine, and he's probably even lost a few pounds after his little stint at Camp Fed Country Club.

12. This so fucked!
I got a Federal charge for abusing the US Bankruptcy process. I couldn't pay my medical bills. They amounted to 10,438.00 I got 18 months and did 13 in medium security prison. I didn't steal anything, just circumvented the arcane bankruptcy rules.

He is a sleaze ball, yet highly placed official who screwed the publics trust and ripped them off for 100K and he gets 10 months?

It's bullshit. All these fuckin' federal judges and federal prosecutors are a bunch of worthless suck up pieces of shit who need to be removed....

Just shows, you gotta be connected. Equal justice under the law is a myth.
