Nigerian officials said discovery of cases of bird flu on three additional farms indicates the disease is spreading.

The deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has been found on three more farms in northern Nigeria, where thousands of poultry died recently, the BBC said. Africa's first case of bird flu was confirmed Wednesday.

The government says it has quarantined affected farms and large-scale culls of poultry have begun.

Neighboring Benin, Chad, Ghana and Niger have banned chicken imports from Nigeria
