Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has compared himself to both, prompting the open scorn of his political opponents and even the quietly raised eyebrows of his coalition partners.

"I am the Jesus Christ of politics," Italian media quoted him as saying at a dinner with supporters on Saturday night. "I am a patient victim, I put up with everyone, I sacrifice myself for everyone."

Marco Rizzo, a communist parliamentarian, called it a "grotesque comparison."

Italy's general election campaign burst into life at the weekend with Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister, comparing himself to Jesus Christ and claiming that a new opinion poll showed his centre-right government ahead for the first time.

Romano Prodi, leader of the centre-left opposition, meanwhile told supporters that Italy's main challenge was to restore economic growth, which has been exceptionally weak during Mr Berlusconi's five years in power.

President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi dissolved parliament on Saturday, marking the official start of the campaign for the election, which will be held on April 9-10. The new legislature will convene on April 28.

At a dinner with businessmen on Saturday night, an exuberant Mr Berlusconi declared: "I am the Jesus Christ of politics, a patient victim. I put up with everything. I sacrifice myself for everyone. You entrepreneurs must do the same."

It was a characteristically eye-catching remark by the 69-year-old billionaire media magnate, who earlier told a rally of his Forza Italia party: "Churchill liberated us from the Nazis. Silvio Berlusconi will liberate us from the communists."
