Hutchinson downplays impeachment role

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - As one of the House managers in the 1999 impeachment case against Bill Clinton, Asa Hutchinson went before the Senate and pleaded with it to turn the president out of office for lying in the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Now that Hutchinson wants to be governor of Arkansas, his role in Clinton's impeachment doesn't even rate a footnote in the Republican candidate's official campaign biography or a mention at most political gatherings.

"It's something that's a historical fact, but it's also something that's in the past," the former congressman said in a recent interview. "It's a burden our country had to bear. But it's the future I'm focusing on."

Because of the enduring affection for Clinton in his home state, however, some Democrats want Arkansans to remember Hutchinson's past.

He will not succeed in rewriting that history in Arkansas, in my opinion. Timmy boy was banging somebody who worked for him. And as with Newt, I believe this was not a well known fact at the time they were impeaching Clinton. He divorced his wife and married her. That is why he lost his re-election bid. The right-wing fundies were not very forgiving of him.
