CBC: U.S. admits shipping banned beef to Japan

CBC News

The United States took responsibility on Friday for shipping veal containing spinal material to Japan last month, violating a U.S.-Japan trade agreement.

In a report it hopes will persuade Japan to resume importing American beef, agriculture officials said a New York plant shipped prohibited veal because workers and inspectors didn't understand trade rules.

"This was not a situation where somebody was trying to hide something," said Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns, releasing the results of two separate investigations.

"Quite the opposite happened. It very clearly indicates they were just not connecting as to what could be shipped into the Japanese market."

1. Ineptitude seems to be a common defense for US departments once
they run out of lies. Blame the little guys down the chain of command.

3. Oh, please.. The old "They didn't know what they were doing" defense
That will prove enlightening to thee Japanese.

And by "enlightening" I don't mean "reassuring".

4. That is absolute bullshit.
Spinal material carries mad cow, as will as other diseases. Anyone in the beef industry knows that beef with spinal material is contaminated--end of story. Their excuse is like saying "well, we didn't know that we couldn't ship *rotten* beef to the Japanese." We can't eat contaminated beef--and neither can they!
