Fugitive Brothers Caught After 15 Years (Aryan terrorists?)
Two Kansas brothers who dodged authorities for 15 years were arrested in southwestern New Mexico atop stockpiles of drugs, weapons and about 200 pounds of explosives, authorities said.

Officials described Geoffrey Rose, 62, and Gregory Rose, 50, as potential domestic terrorists aligned with white supremacist and anti-government groups.

They were arrested Friday at a rental home in Catron County about 80 miles east of the Arizona border, where authorities said they found military-style helmets and bullet-resistant vests.

Officials had received reports that the two men frequently voiced anti-government threats to federal employees in the area.

2. They're in line for some government jobs
probably in homeland security. After all, they were into securing the White Christian Homeland long before securing the Homeland was cool.

3. They are from Merriam, KS??
That is like 2 miles from my house. It is a suburb of KC.

How creepy. I didn't think we had a white supremacist group here.

9. Kansas has about 7 hate groups.
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 07:42 PM by Jamastiene
That about 30 less than where I live (North Carolina) in comparison. Here is a picture and a link to some reputable data on the issue:

16. It may not be currently active.
That map only lists currently active hate groups, not past incidents. Still, I think it's a good resource for all of us to keep aware. Who knows where the next Timothy McVeigh is currently living. With the recent church burnings, I kind of lost some hope that we were finally moving forward as a country even if our government isn't. So much for that idea.

18. There is now and there never was a hate group in Merriam
Unless you want to consider Scout, a DUer who isn't too fond of *, and then I live only a few miles from her. I am sure there are other like minded people here.

Point is - this was two brothers, period. They are pretty extreme. But that doesn't mena we have a hate group problem here.

4. How come every time i hear one of these stories
about homegrown terrorist, with large stockpiles of weapons and explosives they always give up without a fight?

I'm just asking here! This isn't the first story about these anti-government types that the press tells us that officials told them, were a danger to society, but law enforcement arrest them without a fight.

If they're so bad ass and have all these weapons and or planning on reeking havoc, why do they usually give up without a struggle? I'm glad no one got hurt, but it seems a bit strange to me.

5. A lot of unbreakable convictions start showing cracks
when the time comes to put up or shut up. A lot of people talk big until their house is surrounded by cops and they realize all of a sudden that they're playing for keeps.

You can never really predict ahead of time how someone's going to respond in that sort of situation; I'm sure most of them want to either launch their campaign or go down in a blaze of glory, but the average person is probably more likely to fold in that kind of situation. "Oh shit, this is it, isn't it?"

I'm sure we all have had times where we thought that in Situation X we'd damn well do Y without a second thought, only to surprise and/or disappoint ourselves when the time comes. These guys surrendering so readily is that sort of thing, only (usually) more dramatically.

11. Reuters story: Fugitives caught in New Mexico with munition stash
Fugitives caught in New Mexico with munition stash
Sat Feb 18, 2006 9:18 PM ET

By Eric Auchard

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - U.S. authorities in New Mexico arrested two brothers sought by federal agents for 15 years and found enough explosives to launch an attack on par with the Oklahoma City bombing, the U.S. Marshals Service said on Saturday.

Geoffrey Rose, 62, and Gregory Rose, 49, were arrested on Friday at a rented house outside of Datil, New Mexico, a remote town 80 miles from the Arizona border.

"They shared a hatred of the U.S. government. They have a strong dislike for federal workers. They seem to be isolationist and they had in their possession explosives," said Gorden Eden, U.S. marshal for the District of New Mexico.

"The only thing was that was missing here was evidently that they had not sought an opportunity to use explosives against the federal government," Eden said in a phone interview.

U.S. marshals, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and a special weapons team from Albuquerque, raided the house after marshals in Kansas, acting on an informant's tip, notified their New Mexican counterparts of the potential whereabouts of one of the men.

13. Likewise.
I'm also pleased to see these birds arrested and their stash of weapons and explosives confiscated. I just hope that some Team Shrub political hack doesn't decide that the threat of more terrorism by white supremacists is over and that the new focus of Team Shrub anti-terror efforts should be vegan activists promoting vegetarianism. Unfortunately, considering the sort of right-wing political appointee put into so many critical positions these days, I find my scenario all too likely.

14. Funny how the Headline is not "American Christian Terrorists..."
If these were non-Christian and/or brown skinned people, you can be sure it would say Terrorist and refer to their religion.

19. You're right.
Then we'd be forced to hear most people on DU claiming that Christianity is a religion of peace and how it's not representative of the vast majority of Xians. Just a few bad apples. It spread enlightenment, and it was responsible for preserving classical learning for the Muslims.

Even if the bad apples killed innocents while shouting "Christ is King!" and left videos praising Christianity.
