Ex-Malasian Leader Says He Paid Abramoff

Monday, February 20, 2006
(02-20) 21:05 PST KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) --

Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Monday that disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was paid $1.2 million to organize his 2002 meeting with President Bush, but denied the money came from the Malaysian government.

Mahathir told reporters he was aware a payment was made to Abramoff, but he didn't know who made it. He said he had been persuaded by the U.S. think tank Heritage Foundation to meet with Bush at the time.

"It is true that somebody paid but it was not the (Malaysian) government," Mahathir said. "I understood some people paid a sum of money to lobbyists in America but I do not know who these people were and it was not the Malaysian government."

Mahathir said the Heritage Foundation believed he could help "influence (Bush) in some way regarding U.S. policies."

Malaysia should repeal repressive law

Washington, DC, USA. US president George W. Bush, who is due to meet the Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad today, should make it clear that the fight against terrorism does not give the Malaysian government a blank check to suppress political dissent and deny fundamental human rights, stated yesterday Human Rights Watch.

Human Rights Watch believes that the Bush administration should urge Malaysia to repeal its Internal Security Act (ISA), which was adopted almost 40 years ago to combat Communist rebels and is still frequently used to quash peaceful dissent. The ISA provides for arbitrary arrests and detention without trial for an indefinite period based on mere suspicion that one “may be likely” to commit an act deemed dangerous to national security. It further allows to keep a detainee in solitary confinement for 60 days without legal counsel.

Mahathir tells US
Discard force, use friendly approach
Bernama, Bangkok

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said that the United States should change its approach of using force in dealing with conflicts around the world and instead return to its friendly ways that have won the hearts of many in the past.

In an interview with the Bangkok Post, Monday and published Tuesday, the Prime Minister said that if the US continues to use its current approach, it would not be able to resolve the conflicts it started.

"They must learn. I have great admiration for the United States. They saved us from Japanese occupation and at one time they were concerned about the welfare of everybody," he said.

Dr Mahathir, due to retire in 10 days' time, said it was sad to see American embassies all around the world to be protected, in sharp contrast to the past when they gave aid to everyone and sent its Peace Corps everywhere.

"That's a measure of bad feelings against the Americans now. That's because they changed in attitude. They have become so powerful," he said.

He said using force to submit others seemed to be their foreign policy now while sanctions are applied on countries labelled as not a democratic country.

Dr Mahathir said such policy of using force to curb terrorism had made things difficult for countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.
