FBI: Substance in Texas Dorm Not Ricin
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 5:43 p.m. ET

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A powdery substance found in a roll of quarters at a University of Texas dormitory was not the potentially deadly poison ricin, the FBI said Sunday.

San Antonio FBI spokesman Rene Salinas, who is with the agency's joint terrorism task force, said it still isn't clear what the substance is. He said FBI testing conducted Sunday in Maryland came back negative for ricin, a deadly and easy to produce poison extracted from castor beans, and it is unlikely further testing will be done.

''There were no proteins in there to indicate it was in fact ricin,'' Salinas said.

A field test conducted by state authorities on the substance had come back earlier this week positive for ricin or a substance very close to it, Texas Department of State Health Services spokesman Doug McBride said.

19. No. Shit.
I rarely watch CNN anymore, and I tuned in yesterday to find out why.

Even after they knew it wasn't ricin, they kept spouting on about it. Unbelievable.

But it kept them from reporting on the shitstorm in Iraq, so mission accomplished.

8. Thank heavens! That mask was starting to get to me...
And to think I spent most of a beautiful yesterday taping plastic sheeting over my windows and doors.

Now my sweetheart is pissed because she had to sleep in the car (I wasn't ABOUT to open the door) and the dog crapped twice in the hallway.

12. It's all about "The Threat"
"...It is not DHS' goal to promote security. The goal is to keep the American people as aware of the Threat as efficiently as possible."
-Unknown DHS agent

"A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves."
- Edward R. Murrow

FEAR is what this is all about -- continuously stomping on our faces with Awareness of The Threat.

13. Does that mean CNN spent all that time scaring the hell out of everybody
for no reason.

I was watching CNN the other day when that was going on. I had to turn it off. It was the most pitifully excuse for news reporting that I ever seen.

When they started interviews some student over a bad cell phone connection, in the same dorm where the event occurred, I thought, man, this is the bottom.

24. Has CNN seriously been covering this?
It's such a non-story. Sometimes I think watching cable news actually leaves you less informed. And CNN is as bad as Fox News anymore.

Edited on Sun Feb-26-06 11:11 PM by NYC
Well, not really, but that's because I don't watch television. Otherwise, I would certainly fear laundry detergent. :)

(And, yes, I did the laundry today.)

20. Yes.
That has been my concern. Those poor kids, and their families, waiting for 24 hours to see if they would get sick and die when this was so obviously ridiculous. :grr:

21. Let's see
College dorm + Quarters + white powdery substance = Laundromat

That was my first thought when this story broke, but I'd had past experience via my UT college daughter a few years ago in Austin. She'd been over at friends and was returning back to her dorm late one night and was stopped by traffic cops who decided to harass her. She had split laundry detergent on the floor of her car and they decided it was cocaine, and they were going to arrest her. With that threat she became hysterical & started crying (a sight to see knowing my daughter). she kept telling them it was laundry detergent - that this was crazy and what part of over a cup of spilled "cocaine" on the floorboard of a beat-up college student's car made sense? They finally let her go after warning her about being out after 12 am.

She was pretty shaken up by the experience and wanted us (parents) to sue the city. She was sure her civil rights had been abused. They had been, but I certainly didn't have the money to take on the city of Austin.

25. So can they tell us WTF the substance is or are they too embarrassed.
Or maybe they already spent 500,000. on the incident and don't wan't to spend another two hundred.

27. This story makes no sense whatsoever
Why in the world would anyone bother to test a powdery substance found in a roll of quarters doing laundry duty anyways? Do people in Texas have a habit of licking quarters?

31. I knew when I heard it was UT it wasn ricin. Now if it had been the
A&M, I could have believed it. Some of those Aggies would be capable of raising castor beans and extracting ricin from them.
