SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - California labor leaders announced a campaign on Monday to defeat Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's re-election bid, calling the former film star anti-worker and beholden to big business.

The announcement touches off what could be a fierce re-election fight for Schwarzenegger, who took office after toppling Gray Davis, a Democratic governor with close ties to union leaders.

Unions played an important role in the defeat of a series of initiatives last year that Schwarzenegger cast as reforms and workers groups saw as attempts to gut their power.

"We will find a suitable candidate and mobilize our people to replace this governor," said Art Pulaski, spokesman for the AFL-CIO's California Labor Federation. "We fear he will continue to engage in attacks on workers in his planned next term."...

2. Arnold "I NEED ABREASTLIFT"Schwarzeneggar
Didn't carry ANY county from northern California. He was "put in" simply by having the most name recognition. Trust me, in a real election, he couldn't get elected village idiot.

6. He's polling neck and neck with both Dems
I like Angelides but he's not movie star material. (It's debatable whether Arnie is, also.) I think the race will be close but I've got a smile knowing the unions are gearing up. I saw what they did for the special election. I've never seen such a great grassroots effort. Thank you, unions.

without the interference of diebold, there's no way in hell he'll win this state. He's absolutely despised here. By left, right and centre.

11. I was surprised by the recent polls
Arnie has low approval but the Dems weren't polling that highly. It's going to be a difficult race since Arnie has such name recognition.

I know everyone hates him but we have to get the blue areas to vote. I'm hoping once the primary is past and the Dems have a candidate then the Dem will do better.

14. Exactly, Shanti...
Especially after what amounted to the referendum in November on that idiot's special election. EVERYTHING he pushed was vote down flat across the board.

17. I interviewed a teacher's union rep last week in our town.
He said "we've got 1200 pissed-off teachers ready to walk precincts" for a school board race to take back our district from the Christian right. He added that most of the teachers would gladly carry literature on other Democratic candidates, too.

16. D-i-e-b-o-l-d
could "select him"..of course down here we use Sequoia, but it's just a different page of the same ole book..

I would love to see someone coming forward and making a name for themselves.. Angelides may not have what it takes.. and I fear we will have another free-for-all primary and end up with a ho-hum candidate who cannot get enough votes to scare the vote-riggers off.
