Gibbons finds friends in rural Nevada (birkenstock/human shields)

ELKO -- A year ago, Rep. Jim Gibbons got on the stage at the Elko County Republican Party's annual Lincoln Day Dinner, the rural GOP's event of the year, and let loose.

Gibbons, who represents all of Nevada except most of Clark County, railed against "Birkenstock-wearing, hippie, tie-dyed liberals." He called for liberals to be sent to Iraq as human shields.

Gibbons, one of three Republicans running for governor, now says he had grown weary of his stump speech and, knowing he was on friendly turf, decided to substitute a funny e-mail he had received.

The remarks were well received in this conservative stronghold, but they were quickly criticized in other parts of the state. Gibbons' gubernatorial campaign's distress intensified when it was discovered that the funny e-mail he received was, in fact, the copyrighted work of a writer in Alabama.
