Bush reiterates port veto threat
http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/7DLK77swRk3PBBKhsMSnT00?siteid=mktw&dist=morenews

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The administration may be taking a second look at a Dubai-owned firm's plan to manage terminals at six major U.S. seaports, but President Bush made clear Tuesday that he's convinced the deal should be allowed to proceed.

Speaking to reporters during a White House photo opportunity with visiting Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Bush reiterated last week's threat to veto any legislation that moves to block Dubai Ports World's acquisition of terminal operations from London-based Pacific & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. (UK:PO: news, chart, profile) .

"My position hasn't changed to my message to the Congress. And I appreciate the fact that the companies concerned have asked the Congress for a review of all the security implications," Bush said.

Actually, it's the Bush administration, not Congress, which is conducting the formal review.

Under a deal brokered over the weekend, DPW agreed to restructure the deal, and requested that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, conduct a new, 45-day investigation of the transaction. The committee, which includes representatives from the departments of Homeland Security, Defense and other agencies is chaired by the Treasury Department.

And Bush will then have to decide whether to approve or reject the deal.

I do hope that *Co knows that he will definitely lose the fight on this one.

1. Playing chicken with congressional republicans.
It's bullshit that he wants to let them into all the reasons why this is a good idea. There's a quid pro quo out there he has no intention of lettting see the light of day. He hopes that the threat will cause them to back down NOW and conduct a pro forma rubberstamping.

4. He's making it so easy.
This is like shooting retarded fish in a fucked-up barrel.

HELL NO to the Dubai Deal. HELL NO. Very simple. Somebody has to run our ports, but why does it have to be an Arab royal family with close ties to bin Laden? Somebody else will do it if they don't. So screw the Emir of Dubai.

what if one of the shipments from a port owned by P&O (assuming Bush vetoes or whatever) is going to Israel? since the UAE doesn't recognize Israel, i'm just wondering where they would ship it.

8. It's all a game--he hasn't vetoed yet and Congress won't make him
There will be a "compromise" and he'll declare a victory..then do what ever he pleases until the next time he's stalled.

11. Boosh has NEVER vetoed a bill!
So after 5 years, he finally decides on an issue that he will make a stand on - outsourcing domestic work to the UAE. Hmmm...

12. Ports deal to be approved first, 45-day investigation comes after
This from Sen. Carl Levin, Hardball tonight (Tues.). Also, Levin says the committee NEVER ASKED THE 9-11 COMMISSION ABOUT THE DEAL.

More evidence this is a BushCo investment scam.
