U.S. Envoy Urges Venezuela to End Insults
U.S. Envoy Urges Venezuela to End Insults

29 March, 2006

By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER, 31 minutes ago

CARACAS, Venezuela - The U.S. ambassador to Venezuela said Wednesday he hopes to see more constructive dialogue and less name-calling rhetoric from President Hugo Chavez.

Chavez often calls President Bush "Mr. Danger," and also has labeled him a "madman" and a "drunkard."

"Hopefully, in the future we can express our differences and discrepancies in a manner that doesn‘t include rhetoric like — I don‘t know — donkey, drunkard, murderer, demented person, terrorist," Brownfield told the Venezuelan television station Televen.

The U.S. has accused Chavez of trying to export his socialist "revolution" to neighboring countries, saying he is a destabilizing force in the region. Chavez has responded furiously that he poses no threat, saying the U.S. is the one with a history of invading countries from Iraq to Panama.

3. I guess it would be too much to ask that we lead by example..

...and quite trying to demonize Chavez. Has it not occured to Brownfield, Rice and Bush that if perhaps WE turned down the rhetoric a notch, Chavez might follow?

5. Isn't that funny!!! Notice how Mr. Brownfield
repeats all the insults Mr. Chavez has used to insult Bush with (all deserved, in my opinion). Notice? Donkey, drunkard, demented person....

There is some kind of Freudian term for this. I actually heard the same thing on the radio last week! A reporter was questioning Rumsfailed. He said, "So.....the word is that you are no longer effective in the Pentagon, Mr. Rumsfeld. Rumour has it that you're considered to be AN OLD UNCLE who gets left out of the decision making".

Rumsfailed, of course, took the bait. He attacked the reporter.

9. a case of Kettle calling?
granted Chavez's insults are more low-brow and colorful - but Rice and others have referred to him in very hostile ways - and are implicated in involvement in the 2002 staged (and unsuccessful) coup detat. Throw in friend of the admin Pat Robertson's comments - and it seems a case of kettle calling to me.

12. Use the old GOP stand-by: File a lawsuit against him
I'm not sure what the cause of action would be in the complaint. "Definition of character" maybe?
