NYT: GOP risking hispanic vote on immigration
G.O.P. Risking Hispanic Votes on Immigration

WASHINGTON, March 29 — The battle among Republicans over immigration policy and border security is threatening to undercut a decade-long effort by President Bush and his party to court Hispanic voters, just as both parties are gearing up for the 2006 elections.

"I believe the Republican Party has hurt itself already," said the Rev. Luis Cortes, a Philadelphia pastor close to President Bush and the leader of a national organization of Hispanic Protestant clergy members, saying he delivered that message to the president last week in a meeting at the White House.

To underscore the contested allegiance of Hispanic voters, Mr. Cortes said, he also took a delegation of Hispanic ministers to meet with the leaders of both parties last week, including what he called a productive discussion with Howard Dean, the Democratic chairman.

4. No, but they made pretty impressive gains in 2004
I forget the actual numbers, somewhere in the 30% range, so still well under the 50% mark, but given that traditionally it's been bloody hard to find even one Hispanic willing to vote repuke, the thirty-something percent support was astonishingly high relative to what it had been.

8. I think this was debunked by a Mexican American org
and no, I don't have a link in hand. But, that is my recollection.

The Thugs were desparate to account for 3 million votes or so. This was debunked along with the whole "values votes" meme that all the talking heads repeated endlessly that weekend.

If I can find the study, I'll put it up.

5. Hispanics who vote repub based on social/cultural issues
aren't going to vote dem b/c the repubs played (pretend) hardball on illegal immigration. I would imagine that many hispanics agree with them and, at the very least, it is expected. This sounds more like a message to rank-and-file republicans, "see how we're willing to bleed for you". :eyes:

6. Most Hispanics are catholic and voted against Abortion
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 01:09 PM by lovuian
that was for Bush ... Jeb and George are both in Texas and Florida
there are large hispanic populations in all of them...

I think saying the Hispanic vote always votes Democrat is wrong...
They did for Gore but not for Kerry...

The Hispanic Vote Elects Bush

The biggest reason for Bush's victory was that he finally cracked the Democratic stranglehold on the Hispanic vote.

While Gore won 65 percent of the Latino community, holding Bush to a mere 35 percent, Kerry only carried the Hispanic vote by 55-45, paving the way for the Bush victory.

Since Hispanics cast 12 percent of the vote in 2004, their 10-point movement to the GOP gave the president an additional 1.2 percent of the national vote.

Take a similar amount away from Kerry, and the Latinos gave Bush a 2.4 percent edge in the general election balloting.

People who keep saying Hispanics vote democrat is not giving straight facts... I think the Hispanic vote feel betrayed by Bush and yes they should feel betrayed... He screwed them totally...

7. The myth of "Hispanic Votes" rears its ugly face again
Ask former California Governor Gray Davis, or his former Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante, about the Hispanic vote.

Hispanic people are about as diverse in opionions and attitudes as the general population.

9. Exactly Slackmaster... and Bush has been catering it to it
by opening the borders but even the Hispanic voters are realizing he has royally screwed them... Anybody who voted for Bush is going to get screwed from corporations to antiabortion voters... Bush was only there to get his cronies richer... screw America otherwise infact lets try to destroy it...

14. Plenty of time to mend fences later
You should pardon the expression. Right now, Bush and the Republicans must (must, Must, MUST) do some backfilling with some of their red meat reactionary backers. They're pretty scared that some of their base might decide to sit out the election come November, and they're laying a ground work for them to reassure them "See? We're the same fear-mongering racists we've always been. Don't you believe for a second that we've forgotten you or your precious, precious votes."

Come July and August, the GOP is thinking they can habla a little espanol and retrieve the straying Latino vote, and reassure them that all this unpleasantness was just for show. No promblemo, eh Jefe?

It's absolutely vital that totally disparate groups both think that the GOP is putting their interests first, and so they have to play first one side, then the other. It's tough, but with the active complicity of the media, who never have the bad taste to bring up prior contradictory Republican statements, they are able to bamboozle folks over and over again. You truly can fool some of the people all of the time.

17. Err, slightly off-topic...
but could someone clarify for me how refugee status works for citizenship down there? I had checked out the Newsweek photo spread currently up as "Immigrants change the Heartland" on their site, and will admit to basically only hearing the sound bites of "illegal alien/hispanic" repeated ad nauseum for years and years. I found it surpirsing how many refugee's from the Sudan, Somalia, Liberia, SE Asia have set-up communities within communities in the US.
