President's approval rating sags over Iraq, economy (CNN Poll 55%)
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/a/2003/07/18/national1837EDT0730.DTL

The public has grown increasingly uneasy with President Bush's handling of the economy and the situation in Iraq, a new poll suggests.

Bush's overall job approval dropped 8 points since May to 55 percent, according to a CNN-Time poll released Friday. A majority in this poll, 52 percent, said the president is doing a poor job of handling the economy, and just four in 10 say the U.S.-led military campaign in Iraq has been a success. That's down from 52 percent who felt that way in late March.

Fifty-five percent of Americans said they approved of the way Bush is handling Iraq, according to the poll, compared with 69 percent in May.

The poll of 1,004 adults was conducted Wednesday and Thursday and has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

--snip--

Half in the poll, 50 percent, said it was likely they would support Bush's re-election, while almost that many, 46 percent, said it was unlikely.

1. This Administration is Falling Apart at the Seams.
And the American people are now getting a sense that the ship is adrift and that their "captain" is a braggart, a fool and a jerk.

Stop the War!
Impeach Bush and Cheney!

2. But...but...he was going to run as Great Warrior Chief, Mighty Leader!
Yes, yes, he was. I expect the tv spots have already been assembled, George landing on the Lincoln, stirring patriotic music, the statue toppling, Iraqis cheering, US soldiers looking brave, but happy and pleased at their successful mission, George conferring praise.

Oh, it was going to be a glorious campaign.

What went wrong do you think?

4. shit, I guess we'll bomb Iran next?
I dunno, though, the Ayatollah never had as much staying power as a BFEE baddie as Saddam did, and of course he's no longer there. They haven't given themselves enough time to develop a new proper villain in that country, so maybe it won't work.

The really intriguing part is the big dip in the economy approval; as far as I know, the economy hasn't gotten any more heinous than it was before the "Bush Lied" revelation, and yet now a majority feel he's doing a poor job of hadling it. I guess it's a domino effect; as long as he's righteously bombing furriners, people are willing to suspend their disbelief on a number of issues. Once the cracks appear, though, the masses pour right through them.

5. You Have the Right Of It, Sir
The charm of victory has gone: things did not turn out as predicted.

This clears the eyes.

6. I think that people are demoralized
<<But a majority of those polled, 66 percent, said Bush is very or somewhat likely to win the election regardless of how they cast their vote. >>

That's why we need a really dynamic candidate, someone who can fill us with optimism so that we believe that our vote will count

7. Rove has to be shitting his pants
Thats why i think the UN is going to go into Iraq, soon....and Sneering Dick is going to be asked to resign. (Halliburton is going to lose their contracts-probably to France and Russia).

I think Powell has set himself up to be named VP. Someone else suggested that, i think that sounds like a Rove move.

8. Historical question
has any president ever recovered from sagging polls? Yes, yes, I know that 9/11 reversed Bush's slide into the 40's but we are talking about coming into the election time frame at a rather low and decreasing approaval rating... How does a president pull out from such a spiral?

9. Poppy had better numbers at the same stage of his term
that was reported today.

Instead of Dukakis in the tank, Dems will have Junior in the flight suit, with the salami taped to his leg. That might be the most ill-advised photo-op ever. I doubt Rove will want to hear the word Iraq, in 10 months.

18. Dick Morris was alarmed at *'s poll numbers
and said he should never have gone to Africa, and should forego his vacation to work night and day at the White House to show he's on top of it all. But he won't.

let him continue to work half days, 3 days a week. Think how much damage he could do if he actually tried to do anything but photo-ops...
