Darfur food rations cut in half

Malnutrition is on the rise again in Darfur
The UN is cutting in half its daily rations in Sudan's Darfur region because of a severe funding shortfall.

"This is one of the hardest decisions I have ever made," James Morris, head of the UN's World Food Programme, said.

From May the ration will be half the minimum amount required each day. The cut comes as the UN said Darfur's malnutrition rates are rising again.

Nearly 3m people in Darfur depend on food aid after being driven off their land in three years of conflict.

Despite a ceasefire and on-going peace negotiations, large areas of Darfur are now affected by fighting between government forces, militias and rebels.

"Donor governments have given the World Food Program only $238 million of the $746 million the agency needs this year for the whole of Sudan, said WFP spokeswoman Christiane Berthiaume.

This year, the United States has contributed $188 million, the majority of WFP's funding for Sudan. Other contributions have come from the U.N. Common Humanitarian Fund, as well as the governments of Libya, Canada, Norway, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium.

The agency is targeting all national governments for more donations because the situation is critical. "In a situation like that you just call all of them and say, 'We have a problem,'" Berthiaume said.

The private sector may also contribute some funding, although the shortfall is so large that only governments can really raise the required amount, she said."

I'm no fan of Bolton or Bush but this isn't them. The rest of the world needs to chip in and help on this one as well. While I'm sure we can and should contribute more that $188 million, it's the rest of the world that needs to step up on this one. Out of all the money contributed, we've donated all but $50 million. That isn't right at all. With the debacle in Iraq and Katrina, we can only donate borrowed money. Maybe the Chinese could forgive some of our debt if we donate it to the Darfur cause. I doubt they will but that's one option.
